Abstract: 958,878. Electric digital calculators. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. March 15, 1963 [March 20, 1962], No. 10378/63. Heading G4A. A code converter carries out a check on digital data before converting it from one code to another and passes it unchanged if it detects an error. As described a tape reader supplies binary coded decimal signals to a junction box 1. The four binary bits, are fed to a converter for converting to "2 out of 5" code. The binary bits are also fed together with a parity check bit C to a parity checker 2 which produces a signal #, to gate the converted data to a buffer register 5 connected to the main store of a computer, if the parity is correct but produces a signal ## to open a gate 6 to pass the unconverted binary data instead if an error is detected by the parity checker. An additional bit e is added to the four unconverted bits to ensure that the parity of the word in error is odd so that the computer will detect it as being distinct from "2 out of 5" code and print out the error. The signals #, ## and # are generated by combining the binary bits and the check bit C in various combinations in AND and OR gates (Fig. 2 not shown). A second circuit used for converting pairs of four bit characters in parallel or for converting a six-channel binary coded decimal to two "2 out of 5" code groups is also described.
