Abstract: An image is captured into a video signal comprised of individual pixels by means of an array sensor with color stripes. When processing the signal from the sensor, the system first interprets the highest frequencies of the signal as an upper sideband of the I color component in such a way that doubles the recoverable bandwidth of color detail. From the upper sideband of the signal, the corresponding lower color sideband is predicted and its effect is then subtracted from the luminance component, from which, in turn, an image is generated. The resulting image thereby produced is thus enhanced in sharpness while at the same time exhibiting a reduction in artifacts. Preferably color is demodulated from such a striped array sensor signal wherein the step is included of demodulating the predominant I color vector from the color carrier utilizing an asymmetric sideband filter.

Abstract: A method, system and process for improving image enhancement tools through the application of expert systems. The improvements are accomplished by the operation of a process in the memory of a processor that enhances an image based on a set of criteria entered by a user. The image is enhanced in at least two ways and the two enhanced images (510, 520) are presented to the user. The user selects the image that appears best and the selected image (530) is thereafter used for subsequent image enhancements according to the user criteria until a final choice of images (550, 560) is presented.

Abstract: A plurality of frames associated with sequences of video source material representing a series of scene changes are digitized. A computerized process analyzes the digitized information and identifies one or more frames of the source material associated with and representative of each such scene change and/or sequence. The representative frames are displayed. A selected frame from the display will thereby cause automatic selection and association of a sequence of frames comprising a corresponding video sequence from which the frame was selected for subsequent playback. In a preferred embodiment, the entirety of the representative frames or a subset thereof are specified and ordered. The order of the corresponding frames of video segments or scenes corresponding to each such selected and ordered representative frame are thereby automatically also ordered. Simplified video editing is accomplished by manipulating these representative frames, each associated with a different scene or video sequence.

Abstract: A system and method to compensate for effects of a recording medium such as film on image data retrieved therefrom. Red, green, blue, and infrared light is sequentially transmitted through film having an image exposed therein to the system which captures corresponding images. The infrared image maps the location, boundaries and intensities of the media defects. The map is employed combinatorially with the other captured images resulting in an image from the film free of the effects of the film defects. In one embodiment the effects of the imperfections are divided out from the red, green, blue spectra in an operation dividing out the infrared image data on a pixel-by-pixel basis. In an alternate embodiment wherein the imperfections substantially prevent transmission of IR light therethrough, the IR image map of the defects is nevertheless employed with an automated fill-in algorithm more effectively utilized due to the precision with which the defect boundaries are known.

Abstract: A mask having at least two areas is defined over an image. The mask pixels are mapped with, in the preferred embodiments, an error diffusion or dithering process to mix the mask pixels between the areas. Image pixels which correspond in position to the mask pixels are mapped to colour palettes selected for the at least two areas. An image effect is applied to the colour palette of one of the areas called the unmasked area. The same image effect is not applied to the masked area. The error diffusion or dithering has provided a fuzzy edge to the mask and these processes are quick to accomplish with a minimum number of states. Since the image effect is applied to only a relatively small number of palette colours, user feedback is nearly instantaneous.

Abstract: Analog video data input is received by a video display adapter of a digital video capture system. A method is disclosed for retaining most of the resolution of the captured full interlaced image while eliminating the image shake of fast moving components. In a particular embodiment, a first and second sequential field comprising a full frame of video data are captured and digitised (62). These fields are then processed (64,66,68) to determine areas corrupted by fast movement of components of the image which were captured. In the areas of detected fast movement, an estimate for pels is substituted (72) in one field based upon the other field. Resolution loss is thereby confined to small areas which, due to rapid motion, were not well defined prior to processing.

Abstract: An image capture system wherein brightness and contrast levels are set automatically. A video camera scans an image and generates an analog output signal indicative thereof which is utilised by the image capture system to create rows and columns of picture elements. The image is initially scanned utilising a trial brightness and contrast level and then analysed to determine the number of saturated picture elements within the scanned image. Thereafter, the brightness and contrast levels are adjusted so that the number of saturated picture elements tends towards a selected small number.
