Abstract: 817,475. Reactance valve circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 8, 1956 [Feb. 10, 1955], No. 3940/56. Class 40 (5). [Also in Group XIX] In a circuit for decreasing the frequency of a 30 mc/s signal steadily by 4 kc/s per milli-second over a period of 3 milli-seconds, a variable reactance triode 63 forms part of the tank circuit of a Clapp oscillator, the output of which is fed to three doubling stages 50, 51, 52. Oscillation is initiated by a negative signal on a control lead 57, and as a result conduction in the triode is decreased and the frequency of the oscillator lowered. The circuit is described as part of a spin-echo storage system (.see Group XIX).

Abstract: 1275024 Lasers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 20971/71 Heading H1C A laser cavity contains a fly's eye lens and an electro-optic system for transverse mode selection. In Fig. 2, the resonator comprises reflectors 15 1 and 32 1 , and contains lenses 16 1 , 30 1 , and the fly's eye lens 100 1 . The latter is an array of small converging lenses which may be stamped from a single glass or plastics sheet. The lenses 16 1 , 30 1 and 100 1 are positioned so that discrete modes such as 20 1 may be resonated. The active medium produces linearly polarized light due to its Brewster angle ends, and this in combination with a further polarizer 28 1 and an electro-optic KDP sheet 34 1 normally prevents resonator action. When a local field is produced in the KDP sheet by an electron beam 55 1 one of the transverse modes such as 20 1 is resonated because it is no longer attenuated by the polarizing system. Any one of a number of transverse modes corresponding to the lenslets of the fly's eye lens may thus be selected. In Fig. 3, the fly's eye lens is the other side of the KDP layer, and has its surface nearest the electron beam gun reflective to light; its action is as before. Suitable active media are an argon ion laser, a Nd doped YAG, or a hollow cathode ionized mercury laser. The latter comprises a glass tube containing a hollow cathode with a tantalum anode wire at each end. The Brewster windows may be replaced by a separate polarizer. The fly's eye lens avoids the need for focusing the resonated beam on to the KDP, and surface irregularities in the KDP are not important. It is stated that other mode selection devices such as the Kerr-Babinet scanlaser may also use the fly's eye lens in like manner.

Abstract: 897,868 Superconductor circuits. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 25, 1959 [Feb. 27, 1958], No. 6592/59. Class 40 (9). The horizontal and vertical conductors 20- 23, and 25-28 of a matrix are joined at the cross-points by superconductor links 43. Each link is normally maintained resistive by a persistent current in a superconducting loop (not shown in Fig. 2) described in Specification 873,624. The persistent current in a loop is stopped to allow the corresponding link to conduct between a pair of horizontal and vertical conductors. Signals from input stages X1-Xm can thus be switched to any of the output stages Y1-Ym. Superconductor loops.-A loop 61, Fig. 1, of "hard " material with a high critical magnetic field includes an insert 62 of " soft " material with a low critical field. A control current in a single conductor 59 or 60, Fig. 3, is insufficient to drive the insert 62 resistive but coincident control currents in the two conductors drive the insert resistive and any circulating current is dissipated. Control currents in the directions shown in Fig. 5b link no resultant flux with the loop and no circulating current is induced in the loop when insert 62 becomes superconducting again as the control currents cease. The control currents of Fig. 5a leave a circulating current in the loop. The limb 63 is of small cross-section so as to produce a strong field adjacent the link 43. Matrix.-In Fig. 6, horizontal and vertical conductors X1, X2 and Y1 to Y3 are bridged by links 78 of " soft " superconductive material. Superconductive loops 89 of skew shape are each arranged so that a limb 91 of small crosssection abuts a link 78. The " soft " inserts 90 of the loops lie beneath cross-points of control conductor X 1 1-X 1 2 and Y 1 1-Y 1 2. Specification 862,178 also is referred to.
