Abstract: A virtual non-thermionic cathode, e.g. for a flat panel electron beam display, as the position of a space charge cloud associated with it fixed by the geometry of a fixed insulating layer 402. The layer 402 can be made to accurate dimensions and hence the cathode 404 to control grid 406 dimension can be accurately controlled and will not change as a result of any mechanical, electrical or physical changes in the construction. The fixed insulating layer 402 is located on a surface of the control grid 406 facing the cathode 404. A space charge layer is built up on the surface of the insulating layer 402 facing the cathode 404, and thus emission from the cathode 404 is stabilised.

Abstract: A virtual remote cathode, e.g. for a matrix addressed electron beam display, has the position of a space charge cloud associated with it fixed by the geometry of a fixed apertured insulating plate 902. The plate 902 can be made to accurate dimensions and hence the cathode 510 to control grid 502 dimension can be accurately controlled and will not change as a result of any mechanical, electrical or physical changes in the construction. The fixed insulating plate 902, which may have a metal coating, is located on a surface of the control grid 502 facing the cathode. Electrons which pass the control grip 502 enter channels in a collimation block 506 which may be magnetic or electrostatic. The cathode 510 may comprise thermionic emitters from which electrons are extracted by an extractor grid 514.
