Abstract: Described is an optical data storage system which comprises a multiple data surface medium (12) and optical head. The medium comprises a plurality of substrates (50,56,62,68) separated by a light transmissive medium. Data surfaces are located on the substrate surfaces which lie adjacent to a light transmissive medium. The data surfaces are substantially light transmissive. Some of the data recorded in the first data surface represent the number of separate data surfaces contained in the medium.

Abstract: The optical data storage system comprises an optical medium comprising two spaced-apart substrates having the same material thickness, each substrate having a data layer. At least one of the substrates has a data layer which is at least partially transmissive. A light source is located near a first one of the substrates. A device directs light from the source to the medium, and includes a device for focusing the light to a discrete number of focusing positions. Each position defines an optical path between the light source and a corresponding one of the data layers. Each of the two optical paths includes a passage through substrate material having a total thickness equal to three substrate thicknesses.

Abstract: An optical data storage system comprises a multiple data surface medium (12) and optical head. Data surfaces (90, 92, 94, 96, 98, 100, 102, 104) are located on the substrate surfaces. A layer of a semiconductor material is deposited onto each of the data surfaces. The thickness of the semiconductor layer determines the amount of reflectivity for each of the data surfaces.

Abstract: The optical data storage system comprises an optical medium comprising two spaced-apart substrates having the same material thickness, each substrate having a data layer. Data surfaces are located on the substrate surfaces which lie adjacent a light transmissive medium. The data surfaces are substantially light transmissive. The optical head includes an aberration compensator to allow the head to focus onto the different data surfaces and a filter to screen out unwanted reflected light.
