Abstract: A medium susceptible to spoilage enzymes contains a halogen compound selected from alkali metal tetrahaloaurate, a heterocyclic compound containing at least two ring nitrogen atoms and at least one nitrogen-halogen bond, an iodonium compound and a sulphonamide containing at least one nitrogen-halogen bond. The medium may be a an aqueous solution containing soluble cellulose in which the spoilage enzyme is cellulase, for example as in an aqueous paint. the presence of the halogen compound reduces the extent of thinning of the solution. Deterioration due to lipases, proteases or amylase can also be reduced.

Abstract: A composition contains an isothiazolinone or an isothiazolothione derivative and either an alkali metal salt of 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide or a metal salt together with 2, 2'-dithiopyridine-1,1'-dioxide. The isothiazolinone derivative can be 1, 2-benzisothiazolin-3-one or a metal salt or complex thereof. The salt of 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide may be a sodium salt and the salt used together with 2, 2'-dithiopyridine-1,1'-dioxide may be zinc chloride. The compositions have antimicrobial properties and are effective against a range of bacteria and fungi.

Abstract: A composition comprises an isothiazolinone or an isothiazolothione derivative and a disulphide compound in which at least one of the groups attached to the disulphide contains a nitrogen-oxide structure, a group R2NCX or a group CXOR , where R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group at least one R being a hydrocarbyl group, R is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl and X is an oxygen or sulphur atom. The isothiazolinone derivative can be 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one. The disulphide can be 2,2'-dithio-pyridine-1,1'-dioxide; tetramethyldithiocarbamate-disulphide; 2,3-dichloro-3-phenyldithio-N-methylacrylamide or 3,3'-thiodipropionic acid. Compositions of this type show antimicrobial properties and are effective against a range of bacteria and fungi.
