Abstract: An apparatus and method of forming a coated paper applicator (10) is disclosed for inserting a substance into a body cavity along with the applicator itself. An apparatus for coating paper and a method of forming paper into an applicator are also disclosed. The applicator is especially useful for inserting a catamenial tampon into a woman's vagina. The applicator includes a tubular member (22) formed from at least one layer of paper and has an interior and an exterior surface. The tubular member is capable of holding the substance which is to be inserted. At least one of the surfaces of the tubular member is coated with a water-insoluble coating which is comprised of from between about 95 to about 98 percent by weight of a polymeric material and from between about 2 to about 5 percent by weight of a slip agent. The coating provides the tubular member with a dry coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.35 to about 0.56 and a wet coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.78 to about 1.06. These low dry and wet coefficient of kinetic friction values facilitate insertion of the applicator into the body cavity and expulsion of the substance from the applicator.

Abstract: Esta descrito un aplicador de tapon el cual tiene una punta mejorada para facilitar la insercion de un tapon catamenial a adentro de la vagina de una mujer. El aplicador de tapon incluye un primer miembro capaz de albergar un tapon absorbente. El primer miembro tiene un eje longitudinal central y los extremos primero y segundo. Una punta de insercion esta formada integralmente sobre el primer extremo del primer miembro y se extiende hacia afuera desde el mismo. La punta de insercion incluye una parte conformada semiesférica y una parte conformada frustoconica conformada semiesféricamente tiene una abertura que se extiende a través de la misma y la abertura tiene una pared lateral la cual esta alineada esencialmente paralela el eje longitudinal central. La parte conformada frustoconica esta localizada entre la parte conformada semiesférica y el extremo del primer miembro. La punta de insercion contiene una pluralidad de pliegues los cuales son capaces de expandirse radialmente hacia afuera al ser expulsado el tapon del primer miembro. El aplicador además incluye un segundo miembro montado talescopicamente en el segundo extremo del primer miembro. El segundo esta adaptado para expulsar el tapon a través de la punta de insercion al ser empujado éste adentro del primer miembro. El aplicador de tapon también esta descrito en combinacion con un tapon catamenial. También se describe un aparato y un método para doblar, plegar y formar una punta sobre un tubo hueco.

Abstract: A tampon applicator is disclosed which includes first and second telescopically assembled members. The first member is designed to house an absorbent tampon. The first member has first and second spaced apart ends and is formed from at least two separate and distinct layers. An insertion tip is integrally formed on the first end of the first member and extends outwardly therefrom. The insertion tip is constructed from at least one of the two distinct layers and has a thickness which is less than that of the first member. The second member is telescopically mounted in the second end of the first member and is adapted to expel the tampon through the insertion tip as it is pushed into the first member.

Abstract: A tampon applicator is disclosed which has an improved pleated tip for facilitating insertion of a catamenial tampon into a woman's vagina. The tampon applicator includes a first member capable of housing an absorbent tampon. The first member has a central longitudinal axis and first and second ends. An insertion tip is integrally formed on the first end of the first member and extends outwardly therefrom. The insertion tip includes a semispherical shaped portion and a frusto-conical shaped portion. The semispherical shaped portion has an aperture extending therethrough and the aperture has a side wall which is aligned essentially parallel to the central longitudinal axis. The frusto-conical shaped portion is situated between the semi-spherical shaped portion and the first end of the first member. The insertion tip contains a plurality of pleats which are capable of expanding radially outwardly as the tampon is expelled from the first member. The applicator further includes a second member telescopically mounted in the second end of the first member. The second member is adapted to expel the tampon through the insertion tip as it is pushed into the fist member. The tampon applicator is also disclosed in combination with a catamenial tampon. An apparatus and method are also disclosed for crimping, pleating and forming a tip on a hollow tube.
