    Abstract: Multiview backlighting employs a fluorescent multibeam element having a color-tailored emission pattern to provide directional light beams corresponding to a plurality of different views of a multiview image. A multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light as guided light and a fluorescent multibeam element. The fluorescent multibeam element includes a fluorescent material and is configured to provide emitted light having a color-tailor emission pattern from the guided light. The emitted light including a plurality of directional light beams having different principal angular directions corresponding to respective different view directions of a multiview display and the color-tailored emission pattern corresponds to an arrangement of color sub-pixels of a view pixel in the multiview display.

    Abstract: A light source configured to provide output light having a bifurcated emission pattern includes an optical emitter configured to emit light and a emission control layer. The emission control layer includes a first plurality of light-blocking elements spaced apart from one another in a vertical direction at an output aperture of the light source and a second plurality of light-blocking elements displaced from the output aperture and interleaved with the first plurality. The emission control layer is configured to transmit a portion of the emitted light through gaps between the light-blocking elements to provide the output light having the bifurcated emission pattern in the vertical direction. A multiview backlight includes the light source along with a light guide and an array of multibeam elements to provide a plurality of directional light beams using the output light having the bifurcated emission pattern.

    Abstract: A multi-zone backlight and multi-zone multiview display with multiple zones selectively provide broad-angle emitted light corresponding to a two-dimensional (2D) image and directional emitted light corresponding to a multiview image to each zone of the multiple zones. The multi-zone backlight includes broad-angle backlight to provide the broad-angle emitted light and a multiview backlight to provide the directional emitted light. Each of the broad-angle backlight and the multiview backlight is divided into first zone and a second zone that may be independently activated to provide the broad-angle emitted light and multiview emitted light, respectively. The multi-zone includes the broad-angle backlight and the multiview backlight and further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the broad-angle emitted light as a two-dimensional image and the directional emitted light as a multiview image on a zone-by-zone basis.

    Abstract: A light source includes an optical emitter configured to emit light toward an output aperture of the light source. The light source further includes a partially reflective layer at the output aperture. The partially reflective layer is configured to receive the emitted light from the optical emitter and to reflect a portion of the received light as reflected light. The light source additionally includes a scattering medium located between the partially reflective layer and the optical emitter. The scattering medium is configured to scatter the reflected light as scattered light having a different direction from the reflected light. A portion of the scattered light is redirected toward the partially reflective layer as recycled light to be emitted from the light source. A multiview backlight that employs the light source is also provided, along with a method for operating the light source.
