    Abstract: A magneto-rheological fluid damper includes a damper body having a reserv oir (108) for a magneto-rheological fluid, a piston rod (114), a piston rod guide (106) disposed within the damper body, where the piston rod guide has a passage (112) therein for receiving the piston rod. The magneto-rheologica l fluid damper further includes at least a first piston rod seal and at leas t a second piston rod seal (124, 128) arranged to seal between the piston ro d guide and the piston rod. The magneto- rheological fluid damper further in cludes a fluid chamber (134) defined between the piston rod guide and the pi ston rod, the fluid chamber being in communication with the reservoir. The m agneto-rheological fluid damper further includes a piston rod guide filter ( 120) arranged in a communication path between the fluid chamber and the rese rvoir to filter particulates out of the magneto-rheological fluid entering t he fluid chamber. The magneto-rheological fluid damper further includes an a ccumulator (144) arranged between the piston rod guide and the damper body.

    Abstract: A controllable suspension system for controlling the relative motion betw een a first body (22) and a second body (24) includes at least one strut (30 ) including a magneto-rheological fluid damper (32,200). The fluid damper (3 2,200) includes a piston rod guide (206) disposed within a damper body (202) . The piston rod guide (206) has a passage (212) therein for receiving a pis ton rod (52,214). A piston rod bearing assembly (54,232) is disposed in the piston rod guide (206) to engage with and support reciprocal motion of the p iston rod (52,214). At least a first piston rod seal (224) and at least a se cond piston rod seal (228) are arranged to seal between the piston rod guide (206) and the piston rod (52,214). A fluid chamber (234) is defined between the piston rod guide (206) and the piston rod (52,214). A piston rod guide (206) gas charged accumulator (244,272) is arranged between the piston rod ( 52,214) and the damper body (202).
