    Abstract: Using an imaging system, an optical MEMS devices is imaged so that in combination with an actual one or more other optical MEMS devices, or images thereof, a single virtual optical MEMS device is formed that has the size of each of the optical MEMS devices combined. The physical size of the arrangement may be reduced by compacting the optical path, e.g., using appropriate conventional mirrors , and/or employing folded arrangements, i.e., arrangements in which there is only one MEMS device stage that does double duty for both input and output through the use of at least one conventional mirror. The imaging system may reproduce the angle of reflection of the light from the micro mirror, e.g., using a telecentric system. A prism m ay be employed to align the various optical MEMS devices, or images thereof.

    Abstract: A programmable optical demultiplexer can independently assign every inp ut optical channel in a WDM optical communications signal to depart from any desired output port. The demultiplexer device can also be operated in the reverse direction, and thus achieve programmable optical multiplexer functionality, by acceptin g different wavelengths at each of multiple input ports and efficiently combining the wavelength channels at the multiplexes output port. The programmable multiplexer/demultiplexer device has an optical arrangement for spatially dispersing the optical wavelengths, and tunable micro-mirrors for beam steering each channel independently. Controlling the beam reflection direction determines the connectivity between the input and output ports at the wavelength level.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a three-stage scalable hybrid switch fabric has an input stage with one or more electronic input crossbar switches, a middle stage, and an output stage with one or more electronic output crossbar switches. The middle stage has (1) tunable optical transmitters that convert electrical signals received from the input stage into optical signals having selectable wavelengths, (2) one or more passive, wavelength-dependent optical routers that route the optical signals received from the transmitters at input nodes to output nodes, each output node determined by the wavelength of the optical signal and possibly by the input node at which the optical signal is applied, and (3) optical receivers that convert the routed optical signals into electrical signals provided to the output stage. Each scaling increment includes (i) an input crossbar switch and its corresponding optical transmitters and (ii) an output crossbar switch and its corresponding optical receivers.
