Abstract: A catheter assembly for treatment of cardiac arrhythmia, for example, atrial fibrillation, by electrically isolating a vessel, such as a pulmonary vein, from a chamber, such as the left atrium. The catheter assembly includes a catheter body 22 and at least one electrode 26. The catheter body includes a proximal portion 28, an intermediate portion 30 and a distal portion 32. The intermediate portion extends from the proximal portion and defines a longitudinal axis. The distal portion extends from the intermediate portion and forms a substantially closed loop 34, parallel or transverse to the longitudinal axis. The at least one electrode 26 is disposed along the loop. With this configuration, the loop is axially directed into contact with the chamber wall about the vessel ostium. Upon energization, the electrode ablates a continuous lesion pattern about the vessel ostium, thereby electrically isolating the vessel from the chamber.

Abstract: Polymeric tubing having an outer surface with a reduced coefficient of friction. The outer surface is treated by an exposure to a plasma glow discharge in the presence of an inert gas, and by deposition of a monomer during exposure to the plasma glow discharge for a time sufficient to modify the slip characteristics of the surface of the tube. The tube is preferably exposed to plasma glow discharge for a time sufficient to reduce the coefficient of friction by at least 70%. The tubing may be fabricated of silicone rubber, and the monomer deposited may be N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone.

Abstract: An implantable electrode type lead assembly 10 of the flexible type which is particularly adapted for implantation in the cardiac tissue for applications such as use with a pacemaker. The lead assembly has an electrode head 40 which includes a fixation spiral for implantation into tissue. The spiral or rotation action of the electrode head 40 is controlled by means of an elongated torsionally wound electrical coil conductor 14, the coil extending through the lead from the proximal to the distal end thereof and carried within a silicone tube 24 which is co-extensive therewith, the tube having been especially treated to modify the slip characteristics of the internal diameter (ID) thereof for high efficiency torque transfer.

Assessment of transmurality of a lesion is accomplished by monitoring the depolarization signal in a local electrogram taken using electrodes located adjacent the tissue to be ablated. Following onset of application of ablation energy to heart tissue, the local electrogram is measured with electrodes located adjacent tissue to be ablated so that the ablation energy to ablation elements can be selectively reduced or terminated when transmurality is detected.
