    Abstract: 2-Phenyl-1.2.3-triazole-4-carboxaldehydes having the formula: are obtained by oxidizing a 2-phenylglycosotriazole having the formula: wherein R is hydrogen, halogen, methyl, carboxyl, a sulfonic acid group or the alkali metal salt thereof, n is 2 or 3, R' is hydroxymethyl when n is 2 and is hydroxymethyl or methyl when n is 3, with an oxide of manganese such as manganese dioxide or manganese oxide in dilute sulfuric acid of 20 to 80 wt. % concentration at a temperature of 0 DEG to 80 DEG C. The oxidation reaction is carried out in a dispersed state for from 2 to 100 hours and the resultant aldehyde is separated from the reaction mixture by extraction with an organic solvent. The purity of the aldehyde thus obtained is higher than 85 wt. % and the yield is 40% to quantitative on the basis of 2-phenylglycosotriazole. The aldehyde can be further purified by convenient means.

[Also in Divisions C2, C3 and C4] Textile materials are optically brightened by application of a bis-triazolyl styrene of the formula in which A represents a benzene, naphthalene or acenaphthene nucleus or a benzene or naphthalene nucleus substituted by alkyl, alkoxy, acylamino, sulpho, or an ester or salt thereof or optionally substituted sulphonamide groups, R 1 represents a cyano, sulpho or an ester or salt thereof, optionally substituted sulphonamide, alkyl sulphone, carbamoyl or carboxylate salt or ester group and R 2 represents hydrogen or halogen or the methyl group. The brighteners are particularly useful for the treatment of synthetic fibres or fabrics and may be applied from aqueous dispersions which may contain a surfactant. In treating polyester materials it is preferred to include a carrier such as trichlorobenzene or a salicylic ester in the treatment bath and to subject substrates to a dry-heating treatment after brightening. Examples 1-5 relate to the optical brightening of polyester, polyamide, acetate and polyacrylic fibres and a polyester fabric.
