Abstract: Disclosed are absorbent structures comprising a first layer, a second layer juxtaposed in facing relation with said first layer, wherein at least one of the layers is fluid pervious. These structures also have a continuous region between said first and second layers comprising hydrogel- forming polymer that is substantially uniformly distributed throughout the region. The continuous region at least partially surrounds multiple, spaced-apart zones between said layers, which zones are substantially devoid of hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer. The first and second layers are bonded together such that said hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer is substantially immobilized when in dry state, preferably at sites within a plurality of the zones. Preferably, the hydrogel- forming polymer has relatively high gel permeability such that it forms a gel-continuous fluid transportation layer.

Abstract: Described are absorbent members useful in the containment of body liquids such as urine. The storage members have a high capillary suction capacity. For purposes of the present disclosure, capillary suction capacity is measured in terms of the member's ability to uptake liquid at relatively high capillary pressures, which are generally encountered when the member is positioned in an absorbent article. In particular, capillary suction capacity is measured in terms of a member's capillary sorption absorbent capacity, which is measured in accordance with the Capillary Sorption method described in the Test Methods section of the disclosure. The absorbent members may include an osmotic absorbent (preferably a hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer) or a high surface area material, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: The present invention is a high capillary suction storage absorbent member comprising an agglomerate of particulate hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer and particulate high surface area open-celled hydrophilic foam. In another aspect of the invention the agglomerate of particulate hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer and particulate high surface area open-celled hydrophilic foam is disclosed. The absorbent member is useful in the containment (e.g., storage) of body liquids such as urine. In one embodiment, the storage absorbent member comprises the agglomerate. In another embodiment, the absorbent member comprises the agglomerate adjacent to at least one sheet, strip or piece of high surface area open-celled hydrophilic foam material. In either the storage absorbent member or agglomerates of the invention, the high surface area open-celled hydrophilic foam comprises from about 1% to about 98%, preferably from about 15% to about 85%, more preferably from about 30% to about 40% by weight of the member or agglomerate, respectively. An unique aspect of the agglomerates according to the present invention is that they are formed without the use of a separate bonding substance, such as an adhesive.
