Abstract: METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ESTIMATING POWER REQUIRED FOR TRANSMISSION OF DATA AT A RATE IN A COMMUNICATION SYSTEM Methods and apparatus for estimating a transmission power required for transmission of data and detecting an outage in a communication system are disclosed. A terminal determines a quality metric of a communication link, over which data are to be transmitted, and modifies the determined quality metric by a quality metric margin. The terminal may declare an outage event when power required for transmission of a reference signal exceeds power required for transmission of the reference signal determined form the modified quality metric. Alternatively, the terminal may estimate transmission power required for transmission of data in accordance with the modified quality metric. The quality metric margin may be a pre-determined or dynamically adjusted.

Abstract: An access terminal that is configured for wireless communication with an access network within a sector is disclosed. The access terminal includes a transmitter for transmitting a reverse traffic channel to the access network, an antenna for receiving signals from the access network, a processor, memory in electronic communication with the processor, and instructions stored in the memory, where the instructions are executable to implement a method. The method includes the steps of (a) determining whether a current power allocation grant (1374) for a flow (1316) on the access terminal has been received from the access network (1304), (b) if the current power allocation grant (1374) is still active, setting a current power allocation (1338a) for the flow (1316) equal to the current power allocation grant (1374), (c) if the current power allocation grant (1374) has not been received, determining the current power allocation (1338a) for the flow (1316), (d) determining an accumulated power allocation for the flow (1316), (e) using the current power allocation (1374) for the flow (1316) and the accumulated power allocation for the flow (1316) to determine total available power (1338) for the flow (1316), and (f) using the total available power for the flow (1316) to determine a power level for a packet that is transmitted to the access network.

Abstract: In a wireless communication system, an apparatus and a method are provided for controlling reverse link interference among access terminals that are power controlled by a sector of a base station. In an embodiment, the maximum effective noise power spectral density is used as a parameter for controlling the level of reverse link loading, by setting a reverse activity bit (RAB) to signal the access terminals to reduce their data rates in order to minimize interference between the access terminals if the maximum effective noise power spectral density is above a predetermined threshold.
