Abstract: A method of supervising on the forward link in a high data rate system is disclosed, wherein a base station transmits to an access terminal on a forward traffic channel only when the base station has data to send to the access terminal. Each access terminal generates periodic data rate measurements based on the received forward link signal. Each access terminal then minimizes the period in which it transmits on the reverse link without being power-controlled by turning off its transmitted based on the data rate measurements.

Abstract: In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels. The mobile station selects an available channel and an associated power control sub-channel from the list.

Abstract: A first network access point receives a first wireless link message from a first user terminal. The first wireless link message identifies the first user terminal. The first network access point or other system entity assigns an IP address to the first user terminal for use as a temporary mobile station identifier. The first network access point or other system entity installs a route for the IP address to a controller. The first network access point forwards a wireless link message to the user terminal specifying the IP address. The first or a second network access point receives another wireless link message from the first user terminal in which the first user terminal is identified with the IP address. The first or second network access point parses the message to determine the IP address and creates at least one standard IP packet designating the IP address specified in the message. The first or second network access point forwards the message to a router which routes the packet according to the IP address.

Abstract: In a high data rate communication system, a method and apparatus for efficiently establishing a connection between an access terminal and an access network using a fast access channel and a fast access indicator. Upon receiving a fast access indicator in response to a fast access probe, an access terminal begins transmitting a traffic channel signal containing data rate control (DRC) information. The DRC information is used by the access network to transmit messages such as a traffic channel assignment message at the requested DRC rate.

Abstract: Techniques to forward unsolicited messages from an (IS-2000) CDMA radio network via an HDR radio network to an access terminal. A session is first established between the access terminal and the HDR radio network. During session establishment or thereafter, the access terminal indicates to the HDR radio network an interest in receiving unsolicited messages from the CDMA radio network. The access terminal typically also registers with the CDMA radio network. Thereafter, unsolicited messages can be sent from a mobile station controller (MSC) to the HDR and CDMA radio networks, or sent from the MSC to the CDMA radio network, which then forwards the messages to the HDR radio network. The HDR radio network encapsulates the unsolicited messages and sends the encapsulated messages to the access terminal. The forwarding of unsolicited messages allows the CDMA radio network to communicate with an access terminal.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a cellular telephone system that supports performing an inter-system soft handoff is described. A subscriber unit generates a pilot strength measurement report when the pilot channel from a base station is detected. When a base station controller receiving the pilot strength measurement report determines that the base station is part of a second cellular telephone system, a inter-system soft handoff request is generated. An admission control subsystem receives the inter-system soft handoff and either grants or denies the request base on the traffic level with the second cellular telephone system. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the traffic level is determined based on link load messages received periodically by the admission control subsystem that are generated by an interface port coupled to an interconnect between the first cellular telephone system and the second cellular telephone system. The link load message include peak queue length and average frame rate information.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for adding and removing a target base station from a network of base stations, which includes base stations adjacent the target base station. The apparatus is comprised of two attenuators: a first for setting an artificial receive noise power level and a second for setting a transmit level. The transmit level determines the forward link coverage area of the base station. The artificial noise level sets the reverse link coverage area of the base station. When a base station is added, initially the transmit power is low and the artificial receive noise power is high such that the forward and reverse link coverage areas are collocated in close proximity to the base station. As the base station blossoms into full operation, the artificial receive noise power is decreased and the transmit level is increased such that the two coverage areas of the base station remain balanced as the coverage areas expand. When a base station is to be removed from a system, the same attenuators are used to wilt the two coverage areas in unison as the power level transmitted from the base station decreases.
