Abstract: A method and apparatus for validating a vehicle operator. In one embodiment, an apparatus comprises an input device for allowing entry of vehicle operato r identification information, a transceiver for transmitting a validation request and for receiving a response to the request, a memory for storing pr e- determined identification information, an interface for allowing a processor to communication with a vehicle sub-system, and a processor connected to the input device, the transceiver, the memory, and the interface, the processor for receiving the vehicle operator identification information from the input device, for generating the validation request if at least a portion of the vehicle operator identification information is not found in the memory, and for controlling operation of the vehicle via the interface, in accordance wi th instructions contained in the response.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for determining when a vehicle has arrived or departed from a planned or an unplanned stop, while minimizing or completely eliminating driver intervention. The apparatus comprises a mobile communication terminal located onboard a vehicle for receiving destination information, generally using wireless means, from a central facility or hub. A speedometer also located onboard the vehicle determines the speed of the vehicle and a position sensor onboard the vehicle determines the vehicle position. The vehicle speed and position are provided to a processor, also located onboard the vehicle, which uses the speed and position information to determine a vehicle arrival or departure from a planned or unplanned stop. The processor generates an indication of the event, either arrival or departure, directly to the central facility, to the vehicle operator, or both.

A speedometer (210) also located onboard the vehicle (108) determines the speed of the vehicle and a position sensor (212) onboard the vehicle (108) determines the vehicle position. The vehicle speed and position are provided to a processor (206), also located onboard the vehicle (108), which uses the speed and position information to determine a vehicle arrival or departure from a planned or unplanned stop. The processor (206) generates an indication of the event, either arrival or departure, directly to the central facility (104), to the vehicle operator, or both.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying and validating vehicle operators to multiple electronic systems, such as fleet management centers and electronic monitoring systems, in a communication system. The invention is particularly useful in the commercial trucking industry where multiple electronic applications require the identification of a vehicle operator. Each vehicle operator in the communication system is preassigned a unique identification code which is used to request a login or logoff from the validation system. A database of all vehicle operator identification codes is stored at a central station. The identification code is transmitted from the vehicle to the central station when a login or logoff is desired. If the identification code of the requesting operator is found in the database, any electronic system requiring the vehicle operator's identification is notified of the login of logoff event and the identification of the vehicle operator requesting the event.
