Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, an adaptive cruise control system includes a radio frequency (RF) transmit receive (TR) sensor module (or more simply "sensor") disposed such that a detection zone is deployed in front of a vehicle. The sensor includes a sensor antenna system which comprises a transmit antenna for emitting or transmitting an RF signal and a receive antenna for receiving portions of the transmitted RF signal which are intercepted by one or more objects within a field of view of the transmit antenna and reflected back toward the receive antenna. With this particular arrangement, a detection system that detects objects in a region about a front of a vehicle is provided. If the system determines that the vehicle is approaching an object or that an object is approaching the vehicle, then the sensor initiates steps that are carried out in accordance with a set of rules that control an accelerator of the vehicle. The accelerator is adjusted to maintain a safe trailing distance behind the detected object.

The transmit antenna has radiating elements that generate thirteen beams (330a - 330m) spaced relative to one another by approximately 1.1° and overlapping one another by about one-half beam width. The field of view is about 15.4°, and the receive antenna has substantially the same parameters as the transmit antenna.

Abstract: A timing delay circuit (34) includes a first transistor (Q5) having a control electrode (Q5B) coupled to an input terminal (34a), a reference electrode (Q5C) coupled to a first DC bias terminal (28a) and an output electrode (Q5E) coupled to an output terminal (34b) of the timing delay circuit (34); a second transistor (Q6) having a control electrode (Q6B) coupled to the input terminal (34a), a reference electrode (Q6C) coupled to a second bias terminal (28b) and an output electrode (Q6E); and a third transistor (Q7) having a control electrode (Q7B) coupled to the output electrode (Q6E) of the second transistor (Q6), a reference electrode (Q7C) coupled to the second bias terminal (28b) and an output electrode (Q7E) coupled to the output terminal (34b) of the timing delay circuit (34). The timing delay circuit (34) is the output stage of a driver circuit (28) for a PIN diode (36) which acts as a limiter between a radar transmit/receive duplexor (14) and the radar receiver (20). Control logic signals are applied to a line circuit (24) and converted into signals of suitable voltage and current by a CCD device (26), a voltage translator circuit (30), and a current amplifier (32) before application to the input terminal (34a) of the timing delay circuit (34), which ensures rapid switching.

Abstract: A radar system includes a transmit antenna for transmitting a first RF signal, a receive antenna for receiving a second RF signal, and a receiver circuit coupled to the receive antenna for processing the second RF signal and comprising a video amplifier having a temperature compensating attenuator. A radar receiver includes an RF amplifier, a down-converter and a video amplifier comprising a temperature compensating attenuator. The RF amplifier has an input terminal adapted to receive an RF signal and an output terminal at which an amplified RF signal is provided. The down-converter has an input terminal coupled to the output terminal of the RF amplifier and an output terminal at which a lower frequency signal is provided. The video amplifier has an input terminal coupled to the output terminal of the down-converter and an output terminal at which a filtered signal is provided.
