Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for printing heat activatable ink in a non-activated form onto a printing medium, which apparatus comprises: (i) an ink jet printer (6) for printing an non-activated ink image (3) on a printing medium (9) at an operational printing temperature, (ii) a liquid ink formulation for the printer, comprising finely divided solid dye particles in a liquid carrier, in a colloidal form, which dye solids are provided with an emulsifying enforcing agent which acts as a surfactant and surrounds and shields the dye particles to prevent activation at the printing temperature, and which also acts to prevent agglomeration of the dye particles, wherein the emulsifying enforcing agent allows activation of the dye at an activation temperature that is higher than the printing temperature.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of digital printing, for example using a thermal printer and sublimation inks to form an image. In one aspect of the invention there is provided a method of digital printing of ink comprising dyes or pigments as colorants, comprising printing an image onto a substrate to form a printed image on the substrate, and subsequently activating the ink to permanently fix the printed image on the substrate, wherein the activating comprises bonding and/or cross-linking of the ink image on the substrate by the reaction between: a reactant comprising a compound with a functional group capable of reacting with active hydrogen, and a co-reactant comprising a compound with a functional group containing active hydrogen. Another aspect of the invention relates to transfer printing, in which an image is printed onto an intermediate substrate to form a printed image on the intermediate substrate, and subsequently transferred a final substrate by activating the ink to permanently fix the printed image on the final substrate.

Abstract: An image is printed on a medium by means of an electrographic device using an ink composition comprising heat activated inks, without substantial activation of the inks during the process of printing the image onto the medium. A molecular sieve added to the ink composition assists activation control. The image is transferred from the medium to the object on which the image is to permanently appear by applying sufficient heat and pressure to the medium to activate and permanently transfer the inks from the medium to an object.
