Abstract: A method of improving the sealing effect against the skin of an absorbent article comprising an absorbent body disposed between liquid impermeable and liquid permeable sheets, such article having either longitudinally extending liquid barriers 28 on each side of the centre line of the permeable top sheet which have free elastic edges for contacting the skin or having a further liquid impermeable, body-contacting sheet with anal and urethral apertures around which elastic sealing edges are provided, comprises increasing the capillary pressure of the pores of said barriers/sealing edges by causing the absolute value of the negative product 2γcos#m/r to increase. This is achieved by decreasing the pore radius r and/or by increasing the wetting angle #, γ being the surface tension of the liquid to be absorbed and cos#m being the weighted mean value of cos#. A diaper or incontinence guard having such improved properties is thereby provided.

Abstract: An absorbent article with an absorbent body enclosed between inner and outer casing sheets and a stiffening element extending from the rear, through the intermediate, and into the front part of the article. The stiffening element's front and rear parts are broader than its intermediate part and the stiffening element is not wider than 4 cm at its front to intermediate transition region. Side flaps are formed by at least some parts of the remainder of the article which extend laterally beyond the stiffening element, so that the distance between side-edges of the stiffening element and an edge of the side flap varies within the region. The stretch resistance of the side flaps is greater than the stiffening element's longitudinal bending resistance, so inward pressing of the side flaps causes the stiffening element to curve longitudinally, to obtain an upwardly concave shape adapted to the shape of a wearer's body.

Abstract: An absorbent article includes a liquid-permeable upper sheet, a liquid impermeable bottom sheet, and an absorbent body between the bottom sheet and the upper sheet, and at least one longitudinally extending liquid barrier comprising an elongated elastic element and an elongated, essentially liquid-impermeable and inelastic material on each side of a longitudinal center line. A liquid impermeable top sheet with an aperture intended to lie in register with a wearer's anus and urethral orifice may also be included. A prestretched elastic band is attached to either an edge of an inelastic material of the liquid impermeable barrier or to the aperture-defining edge of the liquid permeable top sheet. When the article is donned, the elastic device will lie against a wearer, with a free part facing toward the longitudinal center line and a stretchable, puckered sealing edge facing outward from the longitudinal center line.
