Abstract: Alkyl boronic acids RB(OH)2, where R is an alkyl radical of 6 to 8 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting an alkyl magnesium halide with a trialkyl borate at low temperatures and then hydrolysing the intermediate product with dilute sulphuric acid. In examples, the preparation of n-hexyl boronic acid, n-octyl boronic acid, and 2-ethyl hexyl boronic acid, is described.ALSO:A hydrocarbon motor fuel contains a alkyl boronic acid in which the alkyl group has from 6 to 8 carbon atoms. The fuel contains sufficient of the alkyl boronic acid to provide 0.0002 to 0.02 weight per cent of boron. In examples n-hexyl boronic acid, n-octyl boronic acid and 2-ethyl hexyl boronic acid are added to gasoline and to iso-octane. The fuel may also contain tetraethyl lead, antioxidants, gum inhibitors, solvent oils, lubricants, dyes and perfumes.
