Bi-functional lubricant additives exhibiting dispersant and V.I. improving properties are obtained by the Mannich Condensation of an oxidized long-chain high molecular weight amorphous copolymer of essentially ethylene and propylene having a number average molecular weight of at least about 10,000 and at least 140 pendant methyl groups per 1,000 chain carbon atoms, with a formaldehyde yielding reactant and a primary or secondary amine or polyamine, said reactants being employed in the molar ratio of from about 1:2:2 to about 1:20:20, respectively.

THIS INVENTION CONCERNS THE CONDENSATION PRODUCT OF A HIGHER MOLECULAR WEIGHT ALKYL-SUBSTITUTED PHENOL, AN ALKYLENE POLYAMINE, FORMALDEHYDE, AND AN ALDEHYDE REACTANT HAVING MORE THAN ONE CARBON ATOM OR KETON REACTANT OR A MIXTURE OF BOTH REACTANTS. THESE PRODUCTS ARE USEFUL AS ASHLESS DISPERSANTS FOR LUBRICANTS.

DISCLOSED IS A COMPOSITION PREPARED BY (A) REACTING AN OIL-SOLUBLE, HYDROCARBON-SUBSTITUTED SUCCINIC ACID ANHYDRIDE AND UREA, THEREBY FORMING A FIRST INTERMEDIATE, (B) REACTING THE FIRST INTERMEDIATE AND AN ALKYLENE POLYAMINE HAVING THE FORMULA H2N (-ALKYLENE-NH)NH IN WHICH N IS AN INTEGER FROM 1 TO 5 AND "ALKYLENE" IS A SATURATED DIVALENT HYDROCARBON CONTAINING FROM ABOUT 2 TO ABOUT 6 CARBON ATOMS, THEREBY FORMING A SECOND INTERMEDIATE, AND (C) REACTING THE SECOND INTERMEDIATE WITH A STRONG BASE. THIS COMPOSITION IS USEFUL IN KEEPING HARMFUL MATERIALS SUSPENDED IN MOTOR OIL, SO THAT THESE MATERIALS WILL NOT INTERFERE WITH THE OPERATION OF AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
