Abstract: Petroleum distillates containing mercaptans and phenolic compounds are purified by (a) washing with aqueous caustic alkali solution so as to produce a hazy sour distillate phase and an aqueous phase comprising caustic alkali, cresylates and mercaptides, (b) removing the occluded aqueous phase to leave a dephenolated sour distillate, (c) contacting such sour distillate with aqueous solution containing caustic alkali and a gallic acid catalyst, and with free oxygen, and (d) separating the sweet distillate from aqueous solution. The dephenolation step and the use of gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) in the oxidation step avoids the formation of oilsoluble mercaptyl quinones, which would discolour the sweet distillate; this is particularly useful when treating sour cracked naphthas, whether thermally or catalytically cracked. The aqueous caustic alkali solution preferably contains 20-30 per cent NaOH in a volume ratio of 20-100 per cent that of the naphtha at slightly above atmospheric temperature. The gallic acid is present in 0.05-0.5 per cent by weight and the oxygen may be supplied as air, the oxidation step being effected at 100-160 DEG F.
