    Abstract: Refining hydrocarbon oil containing sulphur compounds by contacting in the presence of hydrogen at 600-1000 DEG F. with a catalyst containing cobaltous ferrite (CoFe2O4). A hydrogen partial pressure of 50-3000 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 0.5-20 v/v/hr., and a hydrogen flow rate of 100-10,000 S.C.F./bbl. of feed, may be used. The hydrogen may be supplied from an external source or may be generated in the reactor as in the autofining process, in which case the hydrogen may be recycled and the pressure may be allowed to rise to equilibrium pressure (about 250 p.s.i.g.). The catalyst may be used on a support, e.g. activated alumina or hydrous alumina gel; a fixed bed or fluidized catalyst may be used. Hydrocarbon oils referred to are petroleum, coal hydrogenation and shale oils and may be virgin or cracked distillates, catalytically or thermally cracked naphthas, olefinic naphthas, e.g. those produced by coking reduced crudes, and gas oils are referred to. Cobaltous ferrite may be prepared by mixing a cobalt compound with an iron compound (both compounds being decomposable to the oxide on heating), and heating the mixture at 1000-2000 DEG F. for 1-24 hours. Cobalt compounds specified are CoCO3, 2CoCO3.3Co(OH)2.H2O, Co(OH)2, Co2O3.3H2O, CoO, Co3O4, Co2O3, Co(NO3)2.6H2O and CoC2O4; iron compounds referred to are Fe(OH)3, Fe(OH)2, Fe2O3, FeO, Fe3O4, FeF2, FeCl2, FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3.6H2O or Fe(NO3)3.9H2O, Fe(NO)3)2.6H2O, Fe(C3H5O3)2.3H2O (ferrous lactate), Fe2(C2O4)3 (ferric oxalate) and Fe(CHO2)3 (ferric formate). The mixture of compounds may contain a molar ratio of cobalt to iron of 1 : 10 to 5 : 2, preferably 1 : 2. The cobaltous ferrite may be used as such or may be pelletted, with or without a support, with a binder, such as 1 or 2 per cent of hydrogenated corn oil or stearic acid, which is subsequently burned off the pellets. The catalyst may be regenerated by burning off the hydrocarbonaceous material therefrom by diluted oxygen such as a mixture of flue gas with air.
