Abstract:
A method for determining the servo track pair position and longitudinal tape position for a tape using dedicated servo format, said tape including at least one set of data tracks and dedicated servo tracks, wherein adjacent servo tracks are defined by longitudinal lines through the edges of erased or non-recorded tape portions, is characterized in that information about servo track pair numbers and/or servo sample numbers is recorded into said tape portions and is decoded and read back together with signals from said servo track, wherein the information is recorded in a digital manner by using a digital block format of data blocks requiring preferentially less bytes per block than a data block provided on said data tracks. If information about longitudinal tape position is not required, an analog manner using a fixed set of predetermined frequencies.
Abstract:
A data storage device is disclosed having associated therewith a removable storage medium. The data storage device has a main control unit with a microprocessor. The system is designed such that an internal control program for control of the media is stored directly on the media itself. By use of a boot program which can be stored in the microprocessor or separately from the microprocessor, the control program is read off of the media by the microprocessor and is stored in a main control program storage within the data storage device. The main control program storage is an erasible storage like an EEPROM, RAM, or flash memory.
Abstract:
A mouse system is disclosed for data entry and control and wherein a rolling force of the ball is made adjustable to suit an operator's preference. A friction pad (24) or a magnetic force may be applied to the ball (22) to change and adjust the ball rolling force. Alternatively, a free roller in contact with the ball has its rotational force adjustable by friction or magnetic forces acting on the free roller or its axle. The mouse system disclosed is designed ergonomically to ease operator fatigue and increase an operator's efficiency.
Abstract:
Abstract:

A device for protecting the head of an automobile passenger (30) in the event of a rear-end collision includes an air bag (14) provided in a head cushion (10). An actuation device (22) is provided in the head cushion (10) for inflating the air bag (14), and is activated by a rear-end collision sensor (24) located in the automobile.
Abstract:
A method and system are disclosed for improved edge detection on tapes. By use of a nominal tape having a 100% output, a write head writes with a given write current onto the nominal tape and the output level is read with a read head during a calibration procedure in order to determine a reference level for the 100% nominal tape. Thereafter, when an actual tape is being used, by use of the same write current, a signal is written on the actual tape and is subsequently read to create a read output. That read output is compared to the reference level output derived during the calibration to create a correction factor. The correction factor is then employed to correct a trigger point utilized during a subsequent tape edge determination.
Abstract:
In a tape cartridge of the type used to store data on a magnetic tape in a high-speed data storage and retrieval system, the tape must be maintained at a proper tension within the cartridge so as to maintain the tape taut against the write/read head. Slackness in the tape occurs after a repeated number of changes in the tape transport direction or start/stop events, because the tension experienced by the tape is not the same in both transport directions. A method and apparatus for maintaining tape tension are disclosed wherein a selected tape characteristic is monitored, the characteristic changing as the tape tension changes. If the monitored characteristic exceeds a predetermined value, or after the passage of a selected amount of time, when the next reversal of tape transport direction occurs, the tape is moved a selected distance longer than necessary to effect the reversal so that when a desired data location on the tape reaches the location of the write/read head, the tape will again be at the proper tension.
Abstract:
A computer keyboard mouse system wherein a mouse assembly is integrated into a front or side wall of a keyboard of the computer. A control ball of the mouse assembly protrudes from the front or side wall for control by the operator. To protect against forces directed against the ball of the mouse assembly which could damage it, a ball retaining member is spring loaded such that excessive forces to be protected against will cause the ball to be pushed into the front or side wall. Mouse control keys may be provided adjacent to the mouse assembly on the front or side wall. Also, the control keys can be one or more designated keys of the keyboard itself.
