Abstract: Aspects described herein generally relate to a sol-gel that is the reaction product of an organosilane, a metal alkoxide, an acid, and a thio-lanthanide salt having a solubility of about 1 gram or greater per gram of sol-gel at 23° C. The thio-lanthanide salt includes a cation and a thio-ligand. The cation can be lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, yttrium, cobalt, calcium, strontium, barium, and zirconium. In another aspect, a component, such as a vehicle component, includes a metal substrate and a sol-gel disposed on the metal substrate. Methods can include forming a sol-gel by mixing a metal alkoxide and an acid to form a first mixture; mixing with the first mixture an organosilane to form a second mixture; and mixing with the second mixture a lanthanide salt to form a third mixture.

The methods comprise curing the second material. Methods of heating a surface of a vehicle component comprise applying a voltage to a material comprising a carbon allotrope material, a polymer, and a sulfonic acid. The material is disposed on a surface of a vehicle component. Electrically conductive materials comprise at least one polymer, at least one sulfonic acid, and a carbon allotrope material.

Abstract: A system for measuring corrosion includes a first electrode configured to be connected to a first structure and a second electrode configured to be connected to a second structure. The first and second structures are galvanically-coupled together, and the first and second structures are made of different materials. A chamber is configured to run through one or more cycles while the first electrode, the first structure, the second electrode, and the second structure are positioned inside the chamber. A measurement device is configured to receive data from the first and second electrodes and to measure one or more parameters based at least partially upon the data. A level of corrosion on the first structure, the second structure, or both is configured to be determined based at least partially upon the one or more parameters.

Abstract: Compositions are described for protecting a metal surface against corrosion. The composition includes a corrosion-inhibiting particle. The corrosion inhibiting particle may be usable in an epoxy resin-based coating or an olefin resin-based coating. The particle may include a core and a protectant. The core may include a water soluble corrosion inhibitor. The protectant may be disposed on at least a portion of a surface of the core and may be covalently or ionically bonded to a thiol group of the corrosion inhibitor. The protectant may be configured to reduce reaction between the core and the epoxy resin or the olefin resin. Methods of making the compositions are also disclosed.

Abstract: An example method includes: forming a conductive layer on at least a portion of a surface of a substrate, where the substrate comprises a composite material of an aerodynamic structure, and where the conductive layer is configured to provide a conductive path to conduct an electric current generated by a lightning strike to an electrically-grounded location; depositing an insulating layer on the conductive layer; removing one or more portions of the insulating layer to form respective gaps in the insulating layer and expose corresponding one or more portions of the conductive layer; and forming a resistive-heater layer on the insulating layer such that the resistive-heater layer fills the respective gaps in the insulating layer and contacts the corresponding one or more portions of the conductive layer, such that when electric power is provided to the conductive layer, the electric power is communicated to the resistive-heater layer thereby generating heat therefrom.

Abstract: An example method includes: (i) depositing an insulating layer on a substrate; (ii) forming a conductive polymer layer on the insulating layer; and (iii) repeating deposition of a respective insulating layer, and formation of a respective conductive polymer layer to form a multilayer stack of respective conductive polymer layers interposed between respective insulating layers. Each respective conductive polymer layer has a respective electrical resistance, such that when the respective conductive polymer layers are connected in parallel to a power source, a resultant electrical resistance of the respective conductive polymer layers is less than each respective electrical resistance.
