SOLUTION: This spiral reverse-osmosis membrane element is formed by winding an envelope-shaped reverse-osmosis membrane, a flow passage material on the permeated water side in which wiry material is arranged orthogonally to the raw water flow direction and a flow passage material having a square mesh structure on the raw water side on a water collecting pipe. In the element, the space X between the intersections of the wiry materials vertical to the axis of the water collecting pipe of the flow passage material on the raw water side is controlled to 2-5 mm, and the space Y between the intersections parallel to the axis of the water collecting pipe is adjusted to 1-1.8 times the space X.

In such a hollow fiber membrane module, the cylindrical face of the protective cylinder 4 is made a closed face through which a fluid is impossible to pass in the region at least 10 mm from the adhesive fixed part 3 and an opening part 40 through which a fluid can freely pass is formed in a region of 10-60 mm from the adhesive fixed part 3.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically convert sea water to fresh water by providing a means for pressurizing raw water supplied to a reverse osmosis membrane module for a pump with steam to use steam energy for the power for the pump with respect to a sea water desanilation plant containing the pump and the reverse osmosis membrane module and using a reverse osmosis membrane. SOLUTION: At least a boiler 1 for generating steam by the combustion of heavy oil or coal is provided and a steam turbine 6 is driven sing steam generated thereby as power to drive a high pressure pump 6. The steam discharged from the steam turbine 2 is utilized for heating the collected sea water in a heat exchanger 5 and the steam is cooled and discharged as drain 14. Thus, the collected sea water is heated, pressurized by the pump 6 to be fed to a reverse osmosis membrane unit 7 and separated into a concentrated water 12 concentrated in the salt portion and fresh water 13. By using the device, fresh water is efficiently and economically produced from sea water with efficient use of energy.
