Abstract:
Methods and compositions, which rely upon borax toxicants, to control Tephritidae fruit fly populations below economic thresholds are disclosed. More particularly, methods and compositions which utilize borax toxicants are disclosed which cause the Tephritidae fruit flies to die prematurely or which interfere with the female Tephritidae fruit flies to produce eggs for a period of about seven days. A preferred borax toxicant is borax wherein an effective amount in the compositions to accomplish the above is between at least about 0.01M and about 0.12M or more. A lethal amount of borax that should be consumed by the fruit flies in about a 24 hour period is believed to be between at least about 5mM and about 10mM or more, whereas the amount of borax that should be consumed by the female fruit flies within about a 24 hour period to prevent the female fruit flies from producing eggs for about seven days or longer is believed to be at least about 2.5mM and 5mM or more.

The subject invention pertains to novel methods for treating autoimmune-related diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS). One embodiment of the method of the invention comprises administering interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF- beta ), in combination, to a person afflicted with or predisposed to an autoimmune disease. When administered in combination, these cytokines act in a synergistic manner as suppressor factors to inhibit the activation of self-reactive T cells that are involved in autoimmune disease.

The subject invention pertains to a novel assay device for detecting oxalate in a sample. The assay device comprises enzyme and dye compositions immobilized on a solid carrier matrix. The subject invention can also be used to measure the concentration of oxalate in a sample. The subject invention further pertains to a novel oxalate oxidase composition and methods of preparing the subject enzyme composition. The oxalate oxidase composition can be used in the assay device of the subject invention.

The subject invention pertains to novel methods and compositions for protecting cats from infection by a broad range of FIV strains using a multi-subtype FIV vaccine. Multi-subtype FIV vaccines comprising either cell free whole virus or cell lines infected with viruses are described. Methods for vaccinating cats with the subject vaccine compositions are also described. Cats vaccinated according to the methods and compositions of the subject invention exhibit protective humoral and cellular immune responses to FIV when challenged with homologous or heterologous strains of FIV. The subject invention also pertains to novel feline cell lines that are susceptible to infection by FIV and their methods of use.

A catheter uses a steerable outer catheter with an inner catheter (14) rotatable and extendable with respect to the outer catheter (12). The outer catheter (12) may be positioned within a patient's heart and a portion of the outer catheter (12) may provide movement like that of a windshield wiper by manipulation of a spring (40). By combining the windshield wiper-type movement with the extension and rotation of the inner catheter (14) relative to the outer catheter (12), a large area within a patient's heart may be readily mapped for conduction tissue and be subjected to laser ablation if appropriate. Various configurations provide flexibility in relatively positioning of windows (16) used to apply laser energy and ring electrodes used to sense conduction tissue. Some embodiments provide only laser ablation (no mapping).

Methods of treating autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, are disclosed. The methods employ administration of interferon-tau (IFN tau ) in a therapeutically-effective dose, preferably administered by oral ingestion or injection.
