    Abstract: A processor is provided (410-430) with first and second document images. The first image represents an instance of a reference document to which instance a mark has been added. The second image is selected from among a collection of document images and represents the reference document without the mark. The processor automatically extracts (450) from the first document image a set of pixels representing the mark. This is done by performing a reference-based mark extraction technique in which the second document image serves as a reference image and in which substantially the entirety of the first document image is compared with substantially the entirety of the second document image. Also, the processor is provided (440) with information about a set of active elements of the reference document. The reference document has at least one such active element and each active element is associated with at least one action. The processor interprets (460) the extracted set of pixels representing the mark by determining whether the mark indicates any of the active elements of the reference document. If the mark indicates an active element, the processor facilitates (470) the action with which the indicated active element is associated.

    Abstract: A search and recommendation system employs the preferences and profiles of individual users and groups within a community of users, as well as information derived from categorically organized content pointers, to augment Internet searches, re-rank search results, and provide recommendations for objects based on an initial subject-matter query. The search and recommendation system operates in the context of a content pointer manager, which stores individual users' content pointers (some of which may be published or shared for group use) on a centralized content pointer database connected to the Internet. The shared content pointer manager is implemented as a distributed program, portions of which operate on users' terminals and other portions of which operate on the centralized content pointer database. A user's content pointers are organized in accordance with a local topical categorical hierarchy. The hierarchical organization is used to define a relevance context within which returned objects are evaluated and ordered.

    Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for searching and matching gesture-based data such as handwriting without performing a recognition process on the handwritten gesture data to convert it to a standard computer-coded form. Target data (16) collected as sample data points (20,22) of spatial coordinates over time are concatenated into a single target gesture sequence of sample data points. The sample data points comprising the gesture-based data structure to be searched (the corpus) are grouped into corpus gesture sequences for matching against the target gesture sequence. Matching may be done by any suitable method, and a novel signal comparison technique based on dynamic time warping concepts is illustrated. The result of the matching is a list of the locations of the matching corpus gesture sequences in the corpus, which in turn may be used for further processing, such as the display of an image of the matching corpus gestures for a system user. The ability to determine the existence and location of a gesture in the corpus that matches a target gesture (10) is the basis for performing a variety of additional functions, such as a "find and replace" function and the ability to use gestures as keywords to index a gesture-based data structure without performing recognition on either the keyword gestures or the gesture-based data structure. The technique is suitable for inclusion in any system that accepts gesture-based data, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA) or other pen-based computing device.
