Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new free radical polymerization process which produces polymer particles in a continuous system.
SOLUTION: The process includes: heating to a first polymerization temperature a first mixture including a free radical polymerizable monomer, a free radical initiator, and a stable free radical compound to polymerize only a portion of the monomer, resulting in a prepolymer composition; shearing a second mixture including the prepolymer composition, a continuous phase liquid, and a stabilizing compound to create a mini-emulsion; and flowing the mini-emulsion within a polymerization reactor and heating the mini-emulsion at a second polymerization temperature to form polymeric particles wherein the formation of the polymeric particles occurs while the mini-emulsion flows within the reactor.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carrier of which the desired triboelectrostatic charge characteristic and conductivity are respectively independent by incorporating a polymer into part of carrier pores and coating the surface of the carrier with the polymer. SOLUTION: The carrier contg. the porous hard magnetic cores contains the polymer or polymer mixture (A) in part of the core pores and have the coating of the polymer or the polymer mixture (B) on the carrier. For example, the polymers may be incorporated into about 70 to 100%, more preferably about 80 to 100% of the pores. The respectively polymers are preferably the same and the total content of the polymer (A) in the pores and the polymer (B) of the coating is about 0.5 to 10 wt.%, more preferably about 1 to 5 wt.% of the carrier. Further minutely, the amt. of the polymer (A) is about 40 to 95 wt.%, more preferably about 60 to 90 wt.% of the entire polymer. Further preferably, the amt. of the polymer (B) is about 5 to 60 wt.%, more preferably about 10 to 40 wt.% of the entire polymer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the mechanical properties of a carrier, to reduce the weight and impact thereof and to enable the regulation of a triboelectrostatic charge value by incorporating a polymer into part of core pores and coating the surface of the carrier with the polymer. SOLUTION: The polymer or polymer mixture (A) is included in part of the core pores by the carrier contg. the porous cores. The surface of the carrier is coated with the polymer or the polymer mixture (B) at need. Part of the core pores is, for example, about 70 to 100% of the pores, preferably about 80 to 100%. The respective polymers are preferably the same and the total content of the polymer (A) in the pores and the polymer (B) of the coating is about 0.5 to 10 wt.%, more preferably about 1 to 5 wt.% of the carrier. Further minutaly, the amt. of the polymer (A) in the pores is about 40 to 95 wt.%, more preferably about 60 to 90 wt.% of the entire polymer. Further preferably, the amt. of the polymer (B) is about 5 to 60 wt.%, more preferably about 10 to 40 wt.% of the entire polymer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and economical method of preparing a high purity, clean and dried polymer particle having small particle diameter. SOLUTION: A soln. comprising water and a polyvinyl alcohol contg. an acetate group is prepared. To the prepared soln., a mixture of an alkali metal iodide and iodine are added, and to the resulting mixture an initiator and, in some case, a crosslinking agent are added, and a monomer, a monomer mixture, or a monomer/polymer mixture is added. and it is polymerized. In this method, iodide/iodine/acetate complex is formed before the polymn.
