    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer which can be used as an excellent photoresist by haloalkylating a polymer represented by a specified formula by reacting it with an acetyl halide and dimethoxymethane in the presence of halogen- containing Lewis acid catalyst and methanol. SOLUTION: Acetyl chloride is added to a mixture of dimethoxyethane with methanol to form a methyl acetate solution of chloromethyl ether. After being diluted with 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (hereinbelow referred to as TCE), the solution is heated in the presence of a halogen-containing Lewis acid catalyst and freshly added TCE. A TCE solution of a polymer represented by formula I (wherein x is 0 or 1; n is the number of repeating units; A is formula II or the like; and B is formula III or the like) is added to the reaction mixture, and the entire mixture is heated under reflux for a definite time and cooled to room, temperature. The reaction solution is concentrated in vacuo, and the concentrated solution is added to methanol. The formed precipitate is separated by filtration and dried in vacuo to obtain a haloalkylated polymer.

    Abstract: An external field activated display sheet (10) is disclosed which comprises a plurality of shaped capsules (22) having two opposing chambers (24, 26) at least one capsule for each pixel of an image. Each capsule contains ink (42) in one of its chambers. The ink in each capsule is responsive to an external field (E) being applied across the capsule for the movement from one chamber to the other. An opaque medial sheet (12) blocks the visibility of the ink in the chambers under the medial sheet. Applying an external field across an capsule causes the ink to be moved into the chamber above the medial sheet where it is visible. By applying an external field across selective cavities, an image can be displayed.
