Abstract: There is disclosed a method for the preparation of a homogeneous, physically stable dispersion of colloidal metal particles of a transition metal selected from the group consisting of manganese and rhenium having a size in the range of from about 10 Angstrom units to about 200 Angstrom units. The method comprises preparing a solution of a functional polymer in an inert solvent, and incrementally adding thereto a transition metal precursor, at a temperature at which the transition metal precursor will become bound to the polymer and thermally decompose to produce elemental transition metal particles, the process being carried out in an inert atmosphere. Such dispersions may be used per se as catalysts, or may be used for the preparation of supported colloidal transition metal catalysts. The dispersions may also be used for the preparation of ablative optical recording media.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer which can be used as an excellent photoresist by haloalkylating a polymer represented by a specified formula by reacting it with an acetyl halide and dimethoxymethane in the presence of halogen- containing Lewis acid catalyst and methanol. SOLUTION: Acetyl chloride is added to a mixture of dimethoxyethane with methanol to form a methyl acetate solution of chloromethyl ether. After being diluted with 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (hereinbelow referred to as TCE), the solution is heated in the presence of a halogen-containing Lewis acid catalyst and freshly added TCE. A TCE solution of a polymer represented by formula I (wherein x is 0 or 1; n is the number of repeating units; A is formula II or the like; and B is formula III or the like) is added to the reaction mixture, and the entire mixture is heated under reflux for a definite time and cooled to room, temperature. The reaction solution is concentrated in vacuo, and the concentrated solution is added to methanol. The formed precipitate is separated by filtration and dried in vacuo to obtain a haloalkylated polymer.
