Abstract: The invention relates to a method for thermal digestion of biomass. This method comprises the steps of supplying fresh biomass, preheating the supplied fresh biomass, hydrolysing the preheated biomass, cooling the hydrolysed biomass and discharging the cooled biomass. The supplied biomass is preheated here by mixing the supplied biomass with the hydrolysed biomass. The mixture formed during the preheating can optionally then be separated again into preheated, fresh biomass and partially cooled, hydrolysed biomass. The invention further relates to a installation with which this method can be performed.

Abstract: One of these distilling apparatus (10) comprises two columns, an evaporation column (14) and a condensation column (16), separated by a partition (18) equipped with rows of slits dividing them into 4 distillation stages. The evaporation column (14) comprises plates with hydrophilic or wettable faces, and the condensation column comprises rectangular hollow-plate (21) heat exchangers (221-6). Cold water ascends in these exchangers and saturated humid hot air descends in the condensation column (16). A perforated sheet (251-4) increases the uniformity of the partial airflows descending between the plates. The water is heated in a boiler (34); the hot water is scattered at the top of the evaporation column and the air cooled in the condensation column is sucked downwards by a fan (34). The air flows in a closed circuit. Performance is maximised, after the top temperature TE2 (45 to 90° C.) and the mass flow rate QE0 of the scattered water have been set, by adjusting the mass flow rate QA1 of the sucked dry air in order to give the temperature TA of this air a preset value at the top of the lowest evaporation chamber. Next, the effective cross sections of the partition apertures are adjusted in order to bring the air exiting from the evaporation chambers of higher rank to other preset temperatures TA2 to TAN, the enthalpy curves of the air deviating from flat by 6, with a satisfactory flow rate of distilled water. Applications: production of fresh or very high purity water; production of concentrated industrial wastewater; production of high-concentration ethanol, acids or bases.

Abstract: A chemical dispensing assembly having a base member, a flow chamber, a chemical chamber and a dispensing control conduit, wherein water or other liquid flows through the base member, into the flow chamber, through the dispensing control conduit and out the base member, wherein a small amount of saturated solution retained within the chemical chamber is drawn into the water flow, the chemical chamber being connected below the flow chamber and the volume of the chemical chamber being greater than the volume of the flow chamber. Preferably, the flow chamber is connected to the base member with a bayonet-type connection mechanism, and keys and key slots are provided such that only dedicated flow chambers can be connected to the base member.

Abstract: A groundwater decontamination system includes a decontamination unit adapted to be lowered down through a non-pumping well into an aquifer containing contaminated water. The unit can also be raised up and out of the non-pumping well for cleaning, servicing or replacement. The decontamination unit includes a porous outer tube with a plurality of holes through which contaminated water flows, and a porous inner tube with a plurality of holes through which flows in-flowing contaminated water flowing through outer tube. A contaminant removing reactive barrier material is disposed within the inner tube for removing on contact contaminants from the in flowing water. A flow directing arrangement, preferably in the form of flow directing fins, directs in-flowing water from the holes in the outer tube to the holes in the inner tube (i.e., provider of the channeling of the ground water into the reactive barrier material). The system can monitor the contaminant removal, as well as other conditions of the groundwater.

Abstract: The invention concerns a process and a device for supercritical wet oxidation of a waste mixture containing particles comprised of organic and inorganic components. In the invention, the waste material mixture is introduced into a vessel (2), which is continuously flowed through by water in the direction counter to gravity, and that a near critical or supercritical condition exists. The flow velocity is so selected, that the particles are kept in suspension, however are not transported in the direction of flow, thereby forming a turbulence layer (30) having an upper boundary. Solids present in the water are discharged and fluid, which is located above the upper limit (32) of the turbulence layer, is continuously removed from the vessel.
