Abstract:
An anti-corrosive coating composition comprises a pigment component dispersed in a film-forming binder. The pigment component comprises a salt comprising a polyvalent metal cation and an organic polyphosphonic acid containing at least two phosphonic acid groups. Generally, the molar ratio of polyvalent metal cations to phosphonate groups in the salt is at least 0.8 n:1, where n is the valency of the metal ion. However the composition may also include a corrosion passivator capable of modifying the metal oxide film on the metal to be protected to render it more protective, the ratio of the polyphosphonate salt to the passivator being 1:1 to 50:1 by weight, and in the latter alternative it is also possible to use a lower proportion of polyvalent metal cations.
Abstract:
An autodeposition composition comprising water and resin solids, characterized in that the resin has a glass transition temperature of at least 55°C and in that a substantially water insoluble fugitive plasticizer is present in an amount sufficient to reduce the cracking tendency of autodeposited coatings formed from the composition.
Abstract:
A rust conversion composition comprises the reaction product of a polyhydroxybenzoic acid and a alkane polyol, in admixture with a film forming polymer, and water. The composition is applied to rusted, iron-containing surface, and allowed to dry to from a hard, moisture and corrosion resistant film. Alternatively, the film may be removed to produce an iron-containing surface free of rust.
Abstract:
Corrosion inhibition of metals (especialy iron, zinc, copper, tin and aluminium and in particular mild steel and the zinc surface of galvanised steel) is provided by treatment with an optionally substituted 2-hydroxy-5-alkylbenzaldoxime wherein the 5-alkyl group contains from 7 to 13 carbon atoms. The benzaldoxime may be applied directly or as a solution in an organic solvent or as an aqueous emulsion. The benzaldoxime may be formulated in a surface coating composition.

Protective composition with anticorrosion action for exhaust pipes on internal combustion engines, comprising of a neutralizing substance with a neutralizing effect for acids present in the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, a substance for binding or support, a thickening substance and a dissolving and/or dispersing liquid which can evaporate under the normal operating conditions of the exhaust pipe.
Abstract:
The present invention contemplates the provision of two-component urethane coating compositions comprising a first component comprising an organic polyfunctional isocyanate, and a second component comprising an acidic ester of a phosphoric acid, the alcohol portions of said acidic acid being selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyloxy and hydroxysubstituted hydrocarbyloxy compounds, such compositions providing enhanced corrosion resistance properties as well as improved flame retardency and metal adhesion characteristics over the two-component urethane systems of the prior art. An essential ingredient in the compositions of the invention is a non-Newtonian colloidal disperse system which can be provided with either the first component and/or the second component parts of the compositions of the invention. The non-Newtonian colloidal disperse systems provided in accordance with the present invention comprise (1) solid metal-containing colloidal particles predispersed in (2) a disperse medium of at least one inert organic liquid and (3) as an essential third component at least one member selected from the class consisting of organic compounds which are substantially soluble in said disperse medium, the molecules of said organic compound being characterized by polar substituents and hydrophobic portions. The invention also relates to a method of coating a substrate comprising mixing the foregoing components and depositing the resulting composition on said substrate.
Abstract:
In the protection of ferrous substrates by application of a water-based paint composition followed by drying at ambient temperature susceptibility to flash rusting is reduced by the use of a paint composition having pH in the range from 3.0 to 6.5.
Abstract:
The present invention provides for an anticorrosive random copolymer characterized by: (a) one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, copolymerized with (b) an acceptable anticorrosive amount of a polymerizable surface-active alkylphosphate mononer. The anticorrosive random copolymers and emulsifier-free emulsion copolymers are prepared by reacting an ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) such as styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, butylacrylate, 2-ethylhexylacrylate and acrylic acid, with a polymerizable, surface-active alkylphosphate monomer. The emulsions are employed as binders for aqueous latex paints or can be used alone to coat and protect corrodible substrates. The copolymers protect the substrate from corrosion

Abstract:
® A transparent topcoat coating composition is described comprising a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin material containing low pigment to binder ratio of iron oxide encapsulated mica particles. When used in a multicoat coating process as a transparent topcoat, an article is produced which not only produces improved "metallic" color effects, but is stable to the elements as well.
