Abstract: A lamp (10) for producing a spectral distribution which is substantially identical to daylight color temperature. The lamp contains a filament (18) which, when excited by electrical energy, emits radiant energy at least within the visible spectrum with wavelengths from about 400 to about 700 nanometers, a reflector body (12) with a surface (20) to intercept and reflect the visible spectrum radiant energy which is positioned within the reflector so that at least 50 percent of the visible spectrum radiant energy is directed towards the reflector surface, and a coating (36) on the surface of the reflector body from which the reflected radiance of each wavelength of visible spectrum radiant energy directed towards the reflector surface when combined with the visible spectrum radiant energy not directed towards the reflector surface produces a total light output in substantial accordance with a specified formula.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting the presence of hydrocarbon analyte in at least one of a liquid and vapor state. The apparatus (21) includes an optical fiber (22), an absorber-expander (31) mechanically coupled (32) to the optical fiber (22) to produce a change in transmission of light along the fiber (22) upon absorption of the hydrocarbon (33). The absorber-expander (31) is selected to absorb hydrocarbons, but not water, and to be capable of multiple reversible expansion and contraction cycles without significant structural degradation. The location of the absorber-expander (31) along strand (22) can be determined by optical time domain reflectometry or by digital sensing nodes (122), and multiple couplings (57) and biasing couplings (153) for mounting the absorber-expanders (152) to the optical fiber (151) can be used to enhance sensitivity.

Abstract: A layer or liquid (34), such as alcohol, water or a mixture thereof, on the finger touching surface (22b) of a platen (22) provides an image in a optical fingerprint imaging system which assures valley and ridge definition and continuity by virtue of the liquid filling in the cracks and holes in the ridge zone, by creating an air pocket (36) in the valley zone that holds the valleys open and by otherwise interacting with the finger to reinforce the distinction between valley and ridge zones in the optically imaged picture. Multiple interrogating light beams (30, 32), each incident at greater than the critical angle on the finger touching surface (22b) of the platen (22) assure imaging all minutia and that the valley zones in the image will be black. The technique is useful for roll prints and touch prints.

Abstract: Chemical sensors can detect the presence of chemical species in solution based upon polymer swelling in response to the chemical species. Polymer swelling is indirectly determined by measuring electrical properties of the detector element (9), the state of an electric circuit containing the element or light reflected from a reflector (7) affixed directly (8) or indirectly to the polymer (9) such that increase or decrease in the size of the polymer (9) changes the distance between the reflector (7) and a light source. Measurements of the amount of swelling or shrinkage of the polymer reflect the presence of the chemical species.

Abstract: An optical attenuation measurement system is provided for obtaining signals proportional to movement of a system to which it is attached. The measurement system includes a light source (32) positioned within a length of conduit in which the light emitted will produce multiple reflections. A fiber optic cable (36) is slidably disposed within the conduit to transmit the radiation emitted from the light source (32) gathered thereby. The relative displacement of the fiber optic cable (36) to the light source (32) produces a signal as a function of this displacement which is converted into electrical signals by a light detecting element (38) at the opposite end of the cable. The system is particularly useful to form an interactive device for control of a remote intelligent machine, robot or the like. For example, the system may be used on an operator's hand to detect movement of the hand and fingers for controlling a robotic hand which will mimic the operator's hand movements.

Abstract: A scanning has a spinning mirror (510M) and an array of peripheral stationary mirrors (552M) which generate a scan pattern for reading bar codes (134). The backscatter from the bar code (134) is collected by the peripheral mirrors (532M) and focused by an imaging lens (152). A housing (510M) is provided over the spinning mirror (510M) to reduce windage. The drive motor (118) for the spinning mirror (510M) is mounted in front of the between the peripheral mirrors (552M) and the bar code (134). A backscatter detector (550D) is mounted behind the at the focal point of the imaging lens (152).
