Abstract:
An apparatus for filtering water has an interface and a filtration/purification canister removably mountable thereon. Connecting the canister to the interface automatically opens a check valve permitting water to flow from the interface into and through the canister, and then back to and through the interface to an outlet port. Disconnecting the canister from the interface automatically closes the check valve, stopping the flow of water. The outlet port may be directly connected to an appliance that uses water, eliminating possible contamination that may occur when water is brought indirectly form the outlet port to the appliance. A flapper valve is provided in the canister preventing back flow of fluid from the inlet port of the canister when the canister is not mounted on the interface. The flapper valve also is provided with an actuating means to automatically open the flapper valve when the canister is mounted on the interface.

The filtration system of the present invention comprises first and second filtration tanks. The first filtration tank has a first floating filter media layer, a first upper screen with a first aperture ratio, a first inlet, a first backwash water supply source, and a first backwash water outlet means. The second filtration tank has a second floating filter media layer, a second upper screen with a second aperture ratio, a second inlet, an inflow blocking mechanism capable of blocking inflow of water to be treated through the second inlet, a second backwash water supply source, and a second backwash water outlet means. The first aperture ratio is smaller than the second aperture ratio.

An optical sensing and control device includes a light source emitting a light beam and an optical component in communication with the light beam. The optical component is configured to move the light beam in a plane. The plane extends into an area such that the light beam interacts with particles in the area producing a scattering of the light beam. The optical sensing and control device also includes a photodetector in communication with the particles within the plane. The photodetector configured to generate image data in response to the scattering of the light beam.
