    Abstract: A flicker photometer comprises generating means (1, 8, 4) for generating two beams of light of different colours. Both beams are directed to a viewing means (190), and a subject can vary the intensity of light from one beam relative to the other. The colour of the light seen by the subject is caused to alternate. The performance of the photometer is improved by screens which scatter light before it reaches the subject. A first of the screens (186, 188) reflects light from one beam, whilst a second screen (b) is translucent, and thus transmits light from the other. If light of wavelengths to which the eye is less sensitive is passed through the second screen, whilst light of a wavelength to which the eye is more sensitive passes through the first screen, the screens help to make it practicable for the generating means to use a single lamp (1) to produce the light for both beams.

    Abstract: The application relates to an infrared radiation source for a gas analyzer and a method for generating infrared radiation. The infrared radiation source comprises a body (6), thermal insulation material (5) adapted inside the body (6), a radiant element (1) fitted inside the insulation material (5), elements (2, 3) for feeding electric energy to said radiant element (1), and a channel (7) formed in said body (6) and said thermal insulation material (5) in order to pass the radiation generated by said radiant element (1) to the gas under measurement. According to the description, at least the thermal insulation material (5) adapted in close proximity to the radiant element (1) has a low thermal conductivity and the emissivity of the radiant surface (11) adapted in close proximity to the radiant element (1) is greater than 0.5 at the operating temperature of the source.

    Abstract: In known spectrophometers, a single light source is used to illuminate both a sample and a reference. A single detector is used to detect the light at both the sample and the reference. A chopper wheel having aperture portions is used to allow the light to pass through a selected filter in the apertures. However, in such devices, the beams from the sample and the reference arrive at the detector at the same time and movable shutters need to be employed. Described herein is a spectrophotometer (10) comprising a single light source (12), a single detector (14), optics (30, 36, 340, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 90, 92, 100) for dually and alternatively reading a sample (94) and a reference (96), and which employs only one moving part. That moving part is a chopper (42) containing multiple pass-through apertures (60a, 60b, 60c, 60d, 60e, 60f), each filled with a unique bandpass filter to select wavelengths to specifically illuminate the sample (94) or reference (96). To inform the spectrophotometer (10) whether and when it is reading the sample (94) or the reference (96), energy relay means (70a, 70b, 70c, 70d, 70e, 70f, 70g, 70h, 70i, 70j, 70k, 70l) are provided between an energy emitter (80) and an energy detector (82) in an amount of at least twice the number of the pass-through apertures (60a, 60b, 60c, 60d, 60e, 60f).

    Abstract: A spectrometer which comprises a light source for exciting a sample, and a monochromator whose intensity values, as detected at the output gap, are subjected to further processing in a computer, in conjunction with the associated wavelength values, for the purposes of achieving a large measuring range and a high degree of measuring accuracy is provided with two secondary electron multipliers and a beam splitter which supplies the second secondary electron multiplier with only a small fraction of the radiation issuing from the monochromator. An electronic switch transmits to the computer, by way of an A-D converter, the output of that secondary electron multiplier whose output signal is within the analysable range of levels. The computer causes the monochromator to pass through the measuring range a plurality of times, and individually stores the measurement values which are then processed to form mean values.
