Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a golf club head having a multi-material face. SOLUTION: The face (11) of the golf club head (1) is formed by explosion welding, allowing materials having substantially different properties to be uniformly joined. Explosion welding allows the materials to be joined together via a cold-working process, allowing them to be joined without losing their pre-bonded properties. Thus, the golf club head has a hard and wear resistant material as the ball-impacting face surface explosion welded to a softer material, allowing the multi-material face to be joined to a soft body material such that the body can be bent and customized. The multi-material face also allows for improved playing characteristics by allowing the club designer to use a thinner face and lighter body material while still providing improved face wear resistance and durability. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal wood club with an improved hitting face having a relatively large zone of high initial ball velocity. SOLUTION: The hitting face 2 of a golf club head has improved flexural stiffness properties. The hitting face 2 is made from multiple materials. Each material has a different tensile modulus of elasticity, where the center zone 4 of the hitting face 2 has a much higher tensile modulus of elasticity than the surrounding portions of the hitting face 2. This creates a stiff center zone 4 and a more easily deflected concentric portion. In another embodiment, the materials have different yield strengths, where the center zone 4 of the hitting face 2 has a very high yield strength compared to the surrounding portions of the hitting face 2. The hitting face 2 may then plastically deform around its periphery, while the center zone 4 retains its original shape. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retain a continuous aesthetic look and feel through a club set and also to make fine adjustment possible in gravity and moment of inertia properties. SOLUTION: The mass of the insert is systematically varied through the set such that the mass distribution properties of the set may be systematically varied while retaining a continuous look and feel through the set. The mass of the insert is varied by altering the volume or the density of the insert through the set. Additional design parameters for the set may also be systematically varied through the set, such as groove type and depth, loft angle, cavity volume, hitting face roughness, and sole width. In one embodiment, the mass control insert comprises a dense insert and a lightweight cover. The density of the dense insert can be easily varied to change the mass distribution properties of the club head. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance golf ball having a reduced overall distance while maintaining the appearance of a high-performance trajectory. SOLUTION: This golf ball includes a combination of low CoR core and cover materials coupled with a less aerodynamic dimple pattern that achieves a eduction in carry and overall distance of 15 and 25 yards versus a conventional golf ball, while still providing the look, sound, feed and apparent flight of a conventional golf ball. A high performance golf ball having a reduced distance is also achieved by controlling dimensionless coefficients of lift/weight and drag/weight at certain Reynolds numbers and spin ratios for various CoR. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a set of iron-type golf clubs including long to short irons capable of hitting a sweet spot. SOLUTION: This set of iron-type golf clubs includes long irons with channel back configurations and short irons with cavity back configurations. The rear face configurations transition from pure channel backs through to pure cavity backs for increased performance continuum for the set. Additional design parameters for the set may also be systematically varied through the set, such as groove type and depth, loft angle, cavity volume, hitting face roughness, and sole width. At least one of the clubs of the set includes a sandwich-type construction for the hitting face having a dampening element disposed between a hitting face insert and a lightweight reinforcing core. In one embodiment, at least one club head is oversized. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
