Abstract:
Disclosed is a lubricant composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity having dispersed therein a particulate hydrated alkali-metal borate and an effective amount oil soluble phosphate and/or monothiophosphate compound which stabilizes the composition against the adverse effects of water contamination. The weight ratio of phosphorus from phosphates and monothiophosphates to boron in the lubricant must be greater than 0.014.
Abstract:
An improved lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity, a minor amount by weight of solid particles effective to improve the lubricating properties of the composition; and a minor amount of certain dispersant --VI improver materials. This composition provides improved inhibition of sludge and varnish formation in use.
Abstract:
A lubricating composition is provided which is a stable dispersion of a lubricating fluid such as a natural or synthetic petroleum distillate, and a finely divided polymeric fluorocarbon powder such as polytetrafluoroethylene such as Teflon and a silicon dioxide powder such as a fumed silica. The composition is best provided by utilization of a disc impeller at elevated temperature to attain a moisture-free, even dispersion of the Teflon and the silica in the fluid. The lubricating composition is particularly useful in wide temperature range service, particularly so at extremely high and low temperatures.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a lubricant composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity having dispersed therein a particulate hydrated alkali-metal borate and an effective amount of a sulfur-containing polyhydroxy compound which stabilizes the composition against the adverse effects of water contamination.
Abstract:
Lubricating sealants which are resistant to aprotic solvents such as chloroform and carbon disulfide are prepared by forming a grease comprising glycerine, fumed silica, polyethylene glycol and a minor amount of water.
Abstract:
Metal working operations, especially drawing, are facilitated by applying to the metal a composition which provides lubricity thereto and which melts within the range of about 30.degree.-100.degree. C. The composition comprises at least one ester of a carboxylic acid, with a carboxylic acid or derivative thereof, a phosphorus acid salt and an antioxidant being preferred optional ingredients. The composition may be applied in liquid from and solidifies on cooling to ambient and normal storage temperatures. Prior to application, the composition is preferably heated to a temperature higher than its melting temperature for ease of flow and uniform dispersion thereof onto the metal. In a preferred method of application, a reservoir is located beneath the composition applicator and composition is pumped therefrom to the applicator, preferably a roller coater, with excess composition being recirculated. Steam may be used both to heat the composition to melting point and purge the pump and circulation piping at the start and finish of each run.
Abstract:
A cooling, lubricating and cleaning agent, for use by the metalworking industry, produced by the condensation reaction between an excess amino alcohol with boric acid and the addition of a carboxylic acid to the complex boron containing diamine formed in the reaction system.
Abstract:
An improved lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity; a minor amount by weight of solid particles effective to improve the lubricating properties of the composition; and a minor amount of an oxidized olefin polymer which has been reacted with an aliphatic amine or polyamine. Preferably, this reaction occurs in the presence of a formaldehyde-yielding reactant. This composition provides improved inhibition of sludge and varnish formation in use.
Abstract:
Lubricant compositions comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor proportion of water containing in an amount sufficient to counteract the accelerating effect of water on metal fatigue an amine salt of a half-ester of a substituted succinic acid. Greases containing the above-described amine salts are also provided.
Abstract:
A composition and method of preparation are herein described for molten release and parting compositions adaptable for use in glass-forming operations. The novel composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a mixture of a solid lubricant, a water-soluble silicate binder, a setting agent, and a water-soluble phosphate. A preferred composition comprises a mixture of flake graphite, boron nitride, sodium silicate, zinc oxide and potassium phosphate tribasic.
