Abstract: Spectroscopic apparatus for carrying out sample analysis in which means (6, 7, 8) is provided for generating a plurality of beams of radiant energy, at least one of which forms a reference beam and at least one other forms a sample beam, A radiation detector (4) is arranged to receive each beam successively and is energized by a power source (12) operable to apply any one of a plurality of controlling energy levels (e.g. stabilized voltages) to the radiation detector. The apparatus is calibrated by applying the/or each sample beam to the energized detector and selecting a voltage level for that energization such that the output of the detector is substantially the same as that obtained for all other beams and particularly the reference beam. The apparatus further includes coupling means (15) which, during normal use of the apparatus, causes application of a respective voltage level to the detector according to which beam impinges on that detector.

Abstract: 1504898 Spectrometer beam splitting and recombining system PERKIN-ELMER CORP 8 Aug 1975 [16 Sept 1974] 33226/75 Heading G1A [Also in Division G2] In an optical system wherein an incoming beam is split into sample and reference beams and the divided beams subsequently recombined and passed to an analyser, the splitter and recombiner both comprise alternating stripes of transmissive and reflective material, the stripes of the splitter being arranged to be orthoganal to those of the recombiner. The invention is of particular use for double beam spectrometric systems wherein the sample beam passes through a flame, it being stated that the schlieren interference due to the flame inhomogeniety cannot cause noise consequent on misregistry of the sample beam at the recombiner. The elements may be prepared by deposition of reflective stripes on a transparent substrate, the end most stripes being wide so that the aperture of the combined splitter/recombiner falls well within the aperture of the instrument. A spectrometer Fig. 1 has a splitter 18 with stripes perpendicular to the paper, and a recombiner 26 with stripes parallel to the paper. The reflection/transmission ratio of the recombiner is higher than that of the splitter. The elements comprise aluminium coated on to fused silica.

Abstract: The Fabry-Perot standard thickness control system forms a quasi point image at infinity from a light source. This image describes a geometric figure whose form is such that it cuts the localised Newtons ring system at infinity associated with the standard. The zone of the standard whose thickness is to be controlled is illuminated by the light source at infinity. The light transmitted by the standard is detected. A peak intensity is detected when the source coincides with a Newton ring. From a knowledge of the instants of peak appearance one can calculate the fractional excess of the standard in the zone. This fractional excess is compared with a reference. An error signal is produced which is proportional to any difference. This error signal is applied to a control system which controls the thickness of the standard in the zone.

Abstract: A spectrophotometer of the two-beam type employing two adjustable monochromators and employing a rotating chopper disc to provide time-sharing operation, such as split-beam operation, dual wavelength operation, or other desired modes of operation. The chopper disc motor is stabilized by a fiber optic feedback system and cooperating electronic system utilizing light beams reflected by the underside of the chopper disc and photo diodes responding to these reflections. The main optical system includes an adjustable lens element coupled to one of the monochromators to compensate for variations in refractive index of the lens element with wavelength. The electronic readout system is gated by the chopper disc stabilizing system to maintain synchronism of the readout signals with the two monochromatic excitation beams.
