Abstract: An improved method and circuit is provided for processing waveforms from a railway car heat signal to eliminate spurious signals and to differentiate between roller bearings and friction bearings in a railroad hot box detector system. The waveforms generated by passing bearings are discretely sampled and spurious signals are eliminated by considering only those signals that fall within the crossing points of a threshold value. Discrimination between roller bearings and friction bearings is obtained by determining the ratio of the sum of the discrete values of the amplitude of the waveform within a first set of samples between the crossing points to the sum of the discrete values of the amplitude of the waveform within a second set of samples between the crossing points.

Abstract: PULSE WIDTH DETECTION CIRCUIT FOR ELECTRO-OPTICAL LABEL READING SYSTEM A circuit for producing an output pulse of predetermined amplitude and a width equal to the mid amplitude width of an input pulse from an electro-optical label reading system is provided. The present circuit comprises delay line means having a first output terminal and a second output terminal with the signal at the second output terminal being delayed twice the time of the delay at the first terminal. The first output terminal of the delay line is connected to an amplifier operative to double the amplitude of the signal applied thereto. The output of the amplifier is connected to one input of each of first and second comparators with the other input to the comparators respectively connected to the input signal source and the second terminal of the delay line. The output of the comparators is connected to the input to an AND gate with the output from the AND gate providing the desired pulse width information.

Abstract: A two-level alarm monitor for use with a hot box detector system of the type having first and second sensors each associated with a rail of a track is provided. The monitor includes means connected to the outputs of the sensors for obtaining the difference between the output signals of the sensors and for comparing the difference alternately to first and second predetermined levels which may, for example, represent "warm" and "hot" differential alarm levels or differential alarm levels for friction and roller bearings. The outputs of the sensors are also alternately compared with third and fourth predetermined levels which could, for example, represent "warm" and "hot" absolute alarm levels or absolute alarm levels for friction or roller bearings. The output signals from the comparators are demultiplexed and utilized to generate an alarm signal in the event differential signals or absolute alarm signals exceed associated predetermined levels.

Abstract: A railway safety system is provided to detect defects on railroad rolling stock, such as sticking brakes, which are ultimately manifested by an abnormal temperature rise in the region of the railway car wheel rim. The system utilizes an infrared detector positioned along a section track and focused to scan the wheels of passing cars. Scanning is confined to an area of each wheel between the rail head and the bottom of the car brake shoes.

Abstract: 1445311 Detecting overheating axle boxes SERVO CORP OF AMERICA 7 Jan 1975 [6 March 1974] 645/75 Heading B7H In a system for detecting overheated axle boxes on: railway vehicles in: which a pair of heat detectors, one on each side of a track, scan the axle boxes of opposite wheels of each passing axle and. in which each detector output signal, proportional to axle box temperature, is compared with a series of voltages representing absolute temperature values and in which the difference between the detector output signals is compared with a further series of voltages representing axle box difference temperature values, a multiplex arrangement is provided to reduce the number of comparators required.. Inputs from the detectors associated with rail 1 and. rail 2 are applied on lines 12, 14 to multiplex switch 10 which is activated by a free running multivibrator 32. The switch output is applied to the inputs of differential amplifier 36 which provides in the first position of the switch an output which is a function of the difference between the signals (rail 1 - rail 2) and in the other position of the switch the opposite difference (rail 2-rail 1). The output of the amplifier 26 is applied as one input to a second differential amplifier 38. In addition the individual detector signals are applied in turn via the switch to one input of a third differential amplifier 64. The output of the multivibrator 32 is also connected to a "divide by two" circuit 54 which supplies control signals at half the multivibrator frequency on lines 58 and 60 to control second and third multiplex switches. 40, 66 such that during a first, and subsequently odd, complete cycles of switch 10 the two differences are compared in turn in amplifier 38 with a "warm" difference voltage level provided via switch 40 and the two individual detector signals are compared in amplifier 64 with a "warm" absolute value level provided by switch 66, and during the second, and subsequent even, complete cycles of switch 10 the two difference voltages are compared in turn with a "hot" difference voltage level supplied via switch 40 and the two individual signals are compared in turn with a "hot" absolute voltage level supplied via switch 66. Demultiplexing logic 80 including AND gates controlled by the multivibrator signals and by the divide by two circuit output signals derive alarm signals on lines 102, 104, 106 and 108 from the outputs of the differential amplifiers. In a second arrangement the "hot" and "warm" levels provided via the switches 40, 66 are replaced by hot signals associated respectively with friction and roller bearings and the divide by two circuit is replaced by a circuit which discriminates the type of bearing.
