Abstract:
A computer based system and method provides color solutions to a customer over a computer network. A solution request is received from an operator. A composite solution database is searched to determine a color solution as a function of the solution request.
Abstract:
A method of producing a finish for a selected wood substrate, wherein the finish provides the selected wood substrate with a color that matches the color of a target object. In accordance with the method, calculations are performed to determine the quantities of at least one group of colorants required to produce a semitransparent wood stain from a vehicle, wherein when the semitransparent wood stain is applied to the selected wood substrate, the selected wood substrate will have a color that matches the target object. The calculations are performed using reflectance measurements of the target object obtained using a spectrophotometer and previously obtained spectral data of the colorants as applied to at least one type of wood. The colorants used to form the semitransparent wood stain do not include a white colorant.
Abstract:
A computer system and method for creating an electronic image displaying effect paint samples is provided. The system includes a first module and an image module coupled thereto. The first module is adapted to establish a paint formula having an effect variable and to establish the effect variable as a function of the paint formula. The image module is adapted to generate an intermediate image having an associated color, to modify the intermediate image as a function of the effect variable, to generate the electronic image, and to display the electronic image.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a color selection method, which includes the steps of selecting colors in accordance with identification criteria supplied, for example, by a vehicle manufacturer; displaying the colors in the form of color reference chips on the screen of a display unit attached to a computer; selecting a desired color chip from the color reference chips on the screen; accessing and displaying color formulas; and then finally selecting a desired color formula that lists all the ingredients needed to prepare a coating composition, such as automotive refinish paint or architectural paint, from the color formulas displayed on the screen. The technician can then mix the ingredients, such as tints, in the proportions provided in the desired color formula to make the coating composition. If desired, the method further includes sending the desired color formula to a weighing scale or a tint dispenser attached to the computer so that the ingredients listed in the desired formula can be weighed or dispensed automatically.
Abstract:
A method for selecting a formulation for one or more layers of a multi-layer coating for repair purposes, the multi-layer coating comprising a primer applied on a substrate, at leat one base or top coat and, optionally, a clear coat, the method comprising the following steps: providing a database of colorimetric data relating to a set of formulations and/or relating to constituent for a primer and preferably for one or more base or top coat layers for a multi-layer coating; entering the colorimetric data of an object to be repaired into a computer having access to said database; determining the formulation of the primer and, optionally, of one or more base or top coat layers with the aid of the database, in such a way that the resulting colour of the multi-layer coating to be applied matches the colour of the object to be repaired using the lowest possible amount of coating material.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for color matching are provided, in which paint recipe neural networks are utilized. The color of a standard is expressed as color values. The neural network includes an input layer having nodes for receiving input data related to paint bases. Weighted connections connect to the nodes of the input layer and have coefficients for weighting the input data. An output layer having nodes are either directly or indirectly connected to the weighted connections and generates output data related to color values. The data to the input layer and the data from the output layer are interrelated through the neural network's nonlinear relationship.
Abstract:
A system which enables electronic communication, coordination and dissemination of color-related designs, specifications and products. Color production and maintenance in a simultaneous fashion is provided between a plurality of disparate parties in substantially "real time." The present integrated color-production is capable of importing electronic output from many diverse instruments, including color production-related hardware and software, and further uses the output to automatically deliver product data to and from a plurality of geographically disbursed parties. The present invention also provides an electronic library comprising colors and textures to be used for accurately matching a color sample and/or specification. The integrated, on-line color-related production system of the present invention enables parties to operate at peak efficiency, producing high sales and customer satisfaction.
Abstract:
There is disclosed in particular a method by which workpieces, such as ceramic tiles, can be classified according to their tonal variations. An apparatus operates electronically to capture an electronic image of a tile. That electronic image is then analysed to derive a histogram of the tonal variations in the image. A numerical representation of the tonal variations in the tile is derived utilizing an algorithm operative upon probabilities derived from the histogram. Preferably, each tile is monitored and directed to a stacking station at which tiles having the same tonal variations are collected.
Abstract:
A system and method for determining if a proposed color solution, such as paint, pigments, or dye formulations, is acceptable, is provided. The inputs to the system are the color values of a proposed paint or other color formulation and differential color values. The system includes an input device for entering a proposed color solution and an artificial intelligence tolerance model coupled to the input device. The tolerance model produces an output signal for communicating whether the proposed color solution is acceptable. The artificial intelligence model may be embodied in a neural network. More specifically, the tolerance model may be a back propagation neural network.
