    Abstract: A thermal storage composition is defined by a polymer having thermally responsive absorption or passage capabilities based on an Upper Critical Solution Temperature (UCST) or Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST), and a sorbent in fluidic communication with the polymer. A fluid such as water conveys thermal energy between the polymer and the sorbent based on an identified target temperature that acts as a thermostat for synergistic fluid release and transfer between the polymer and sorbent that stores and releases heat energy in a cyclic manner. The composition includes a synergistic integration of a sorbent and selectively hydrophilic polymer to alternately hydrate according to a target temperature based on the UCST of the water/sorbent combination.

    Abstract: A molten metal inclusion test apparatus includes a spectroscopic appliance for gathering data indicative of the contents of a quantity of molten metal. Laser induced emissions provide spectral data based on the elements present in the melt. Analysis of a series of samplings, or “shots” of laser induced emissions indicates a presence of elements above a background or expected level. These elements appear as spikes in a graphical rendering of the spectral data, defined by a wavelength of the detected element. Correlation of the elements detected in the same shot indicates a composition of the inclusion, typically a particle of an extraneous compound in the melt. Such spectral analysis provides immediate feedback about melt quality, allowing corrective measures to be taken prior to casting.

    Abstract: A noncontact temperature sensing device receives radiative emissions from a sensed object to measure radiant heat flux and computes a temperature using multiple photodiode sensors, or elements, each sensitive to a different bandwidth of near IR light. The device samples a fluctuating heat source such as a flame or explosion at a fast sampling frequency, and compares corresponding or simultaneous readings in each bandwidth for computing a ratio of the respective bands and determining a temperature via ratio pyrometry. Multiple sensors of adjacent bands each receive corresponding readings of near IR emissions, perform fast, concurrent sampling to mitigate inconsistencies of heat source fluctuations, and compute a temperature based on a ratio between the sampled readings of the different bands. Near IR detection allows common and inexpensive photodiodes to be employed, and the photoelectric rather than thermoelectric sensing allows faster sampling and at a greater distance from the sensed heat source.

    Abstract: Actuators and methods of use are provided. An actuator may include an inner member made from an elastic material and defining a compartment for receiving an actuating fluid, the inner member being moveable in a longitudinal direction from a relaxed state to an expanded state by introducing an actuating fluid into the inner member, and an outer member made from an inelastic material and being disposed around the elastic inner member to control expansion of the elastic inner member in a radial direction, the outer member being moveable from a folded relaxed configuration to an unfolded extended configuration as the inner member moves from the relaxed state to the expanded state, wherein the movement of the actuator between the relaxed state and the expanded state causes a movement of a structure to which the actuator is attached.

    Abstract: In a mobile sensing device, a method of detecting blood alcohol content includes receiving time-series gait data from at least one sensor of the mobile sensing device as a user walks and detecting a set of attributes associated with the time-series gait data, each attribute of the set of attributes related to the user's gait. The method includes comparing the set of attributes with a machine learning classification model learned from a training data set of attributes to determine at least one of a blood alcohol content range of the user and an impairment level of the user and outputting a notification associated with the at least one of the blood alcohol content range of the user and the impairment level of the user.
