Abstract: 1317189 Spectrophotometers PERKINELMER Ltd 27 April 1971 [27 Jan 1970] 3848/70 Heading G2J An infrared spectrophotometer with an entrance slit 1 and an exit slit 5 and having two pivotal gratings 3, 4 each scanning a portion of the spectrum and having a small portion of their movement where they overlap and both scan the same portion, is provided with two parallel mirrors 7, 8 which are movable perpendicularly into the beam of light, during the overlap period so that the beam is gradually switched from the grating 3 to the grating 4 or vice versa. The gratings are pivoted by links 25, 21 and cams 19, 18 worm driven by a motor 9 which simultaneously drives a grooved cam 31 that pivots a toothed quadrant 36 to raise and lower the mirrors 7, 8.

Abstract: 1413417 Optical apparatus LKB-PRODUKTER AB 16 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 12900/73 Heading G2J Apparatus for periodically displacing a light beam from a first path to a second path comprises a rotatable annular member having an axial bore whose end surfaces are provided with diametrically opposed reflecting surfaces. As the annular member passes through a certain angular position, light travelling along the first path is reflected at both reflecting surfaces and emerges along the second path. As shown in Fig. 2 the annular member comprises four sectors 9A-D; two opposite sectors 9A, 9C have reflecting surfaces, one sector 9D transmits light and the fourth sector 9B does not transmit light. An application of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Light from sources 1, 2 passes through filters 3, 4 which transmit only wavelengths # 1 , # 2 respectively. The filtered light passes through slits 11, 12 and impinges on the apparatus 9 which directs light from each source alternately through two absorption flow cells 5, 6 to a photo-detector e.g. photo-multiplier 7. If the apparatus 9 is rotated clockwise as viewed from the left the sequence is: (a) # 1 is blocked; # 2 is doubly-reflected through cell 5 ; (b) # 1 is blocked; # 2 is transmitted through cell 6; (c) # 1 is doubly reflected through cell 6; # 2 is blocked and (d) # 1 is transmitted through cell 5; # 2 is blocked. The sector 9D which transmits light may be provided with a filter which absorbs as much light as the two reflecting surfaces.

Abstract: 1290903 Detection of a substance by spectral absorption MULLARD Ltd 18 Nov 1969 56362/69 Heading G1A In a method or apparatus, for determining the relative amount of a substance present in a transparent medium, a beam of radiation is passed through the transparent medium and the beam comprises a first and a second mutually perpendicular plane polarized beam component, the first beam component having a narrow band of frequencies lying within a radiation absorption band of the substance and the second beam component having a further band of frequencies which are substantially unabsorbed by the substance. The planes of polarization of both said components are rotated so that the planes of polarization alternate between two substantially perpendicular orientations and so that they may be selectively passed through the medium, the relative intensities of the components being measured and compared to provide an indication of the amount of the substance present in the medium. In an embodiment, Fig.1, a beam of infrared radiation from a source 4 is split up into the two kinds of components 10, 11 specified above, by means of lens 5, polarizers 6, 7 and appropriate filters 8, 9. The beam components 10, 11 are directed on to an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) 12 which is located in a magnetic field determined by an electric current of square wave form; thereby effecting the alternating of the planes of polarization, so that respective components are passed into sample cell window 16. The sample cell window is in the form of a radiation guide in which radiation passing therealong is repeatedly totally internally reflected at the sides of the guide, as shown. The beam components pass through the cell to a further window 18. The intensities of the two components are detected by a photo-conductor 19; the output from the detector 19 being demodulated in synchronism with the waveform 22 to provide an output display 20 which is representative of the reduction in the intensity of the first beam component due to absorption by the substance present in the cell 1. A schematic circuit arrangement for performing the invention is included in the description.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring the presence of water vapor in helium features providing two narrow infrared frequency band within and outside a water vapor absorption band, alternately projecting the two bands of infrared radiation into the helium by using the polarization properties of the infrared radiation, and subsequently detecting the two infrared bands and comparing their amplitudes. Besides providing an accurate and reliable measurement, the invention is compact and requires no moving mechanical parts.
