Abstract: A vanadium recovery approach utilizes oil fly ash (OFA), in contrast to coal fly ash, for separation and recovery of vanadium. OFA is first carbon burned to reduce the volume for recycling, and also to provide a fuel for other industrial processes. Following an almost 90% weight reduction from carbon burning, the remaining material includes about 18% vanadium. A salt roasting performed at the same temperature (about 650° C.) as the carbon burning allows use of the same oven or furnace, reducing heat requirements for the overall process. Salt roasting generates a water-soluble material from which a water leaching process yields a vanadium leach solution containing recovered vanadium, avoiding a need for caustic or volatile leaching agents. Ammonium metavanadate is precipitated from the vanadium leach solution through addition of ammonium sulfate, and a calcination process used to generate vanadium oxide (V2O5).

Abstract: A shoulder prosthesis restores the complex dynamics of the arm for whole-arm amputees. While most prosthesis for arm amputees focus on restoring the user's capabilities for dexterous manipulation, the disclosed prosthesis remains affixed to the shoulder and exerts a moment on the user's trunk similar to that of the arm during walking for dynamic motion assistance. The prosthesis includes a rotating, gimbaled mass oriented based on gait and stride for emulating forces that would have been provided by the amputee arm. The size, ease of use, and relatively low cost manufacture of the proposed device makes it an attractive complement or alternative to standard prosthesis, particularly for amputees who pursue rigorous or prolonged physical activity.

Abstract: A biocompatible, biodegradable surgical fastening device employs opposed engagement surfaces having receptacles and protrusions, in which the receptacles are responsive to the protrusions on the opposed engagement surface. The fastening device has a generally planar construction defining the engagement surface, such that each engagement surface has a proximate end for engaging the opposed engagement surface, and a distal end for attachment to an anatomical structure. The distal end of two devices each connect to anatomical structures to be joined, and the engagement surfaces joined to each other at the proximate end to complete the repair. The distal end of the engagement surface defines a flexible attachment portion having a lateral attachment width, the lateral width configured for securement to the anatomical structure across a nonlinear disposition of the lateral width. The flexible lateral width conforms around an irregular shape of an anatomical structure such as a tendon, ligament or bone.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a method for determining a deformity in a bone surface comprises performing a scan of a healthy bone and a diseased bone; creating 3-dimensional (3D) representations of a current surface of the diseased bone; constructing an estimated healthy surface in 3D for the diseased bone based on the surface of the healthy bone; and identifying a deformity in the diseased bone by comparing the estimated healthy surface to the current surface of the diseased bone. In some embodiments, the scan is performed using high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT).

Abstract: A toxic waste incinerator is capable of enhanced combustion of hazardous waste (oil contaminated sand, human waste, garbage, etc.) utilizing immersed non-combustible and thermally conductive objects for increasing heat feedback from the flames to the unburned fuel, while air inlets are used to optimize the air entrainment rate to enhance the burning efficiency. The burning rate of a fluidic mass such as a sand-oil mixture is enhanced using immersed conductive objects (copper rods) which enable rapid heat-up of the flame exposed to the upper surface of the rod and transmits heat back into the sand. Consequent conduction of heat to the porous media through the lower portion of the immersed rod significantly increases vaporization and therefore the burning rate. Incineration may be performed on a transient, exigent basis as with hazardous waste and oil spills, or as part of a permanent fixture for receiving an ongoing waste stream.
