Abstract: Multi-piece golf balls having a multi-layered solid core and multi-layered cover are provided. In one version, a six-piece ball having a three-layered core and three-layered cover is formed. Preferably, the inner core is made of a thermoset rubber composition, the intermediate core layer is made of a thermoplastic composition, and the outer core layer is made of a highly neutralized polymer (HNP) composition. The cover includes inner, intermediate, and outer cover layers, wherein the outer cover is made of a composition comprising a polyurethane, polyurea, or copolymer or blend thereof. In a second version, a five-piece ball having a two-layered core and three-layered cover is produced. The finished balls have high resiliency and rebounding properties.

Abstract: Multi-piece golf balls having a solid core and cover are provided. The ball contains a small, heavy inner core and surrounding outer core layer. The inner core preferably contains metal powder such as copper, steel, brass, tungsten, titanium, nickel, iron, tin, and bronze particles dispersed in a thermoset or thermoplastic polymeric matrix. For example, a polybutadiene rubber matrix may be used. In one preferred embodiment, the inner core contains elemental iron powder. Preferably, the particles have a weight average size in the range of about 10 μm to about 450 μm. In one embodiment, the outer surface of the inner core has a structure with projecting members. For example, the outer surface may contain multiple projecting ribs with gaps located between the ribs. The ball includes a cover surrounding the core structure. The cover may be multi-layered.

Abstract: Golf ball incorporating an HNP composition consisting of a mixture of: at least one ethylene acid copolymer; sufficient amount of cation source to neutralize greater than about 100% of all acid groups present; and a highly diverse mixture of at least four organic acids having different characteristics such as relating to: carbon chain lengths, number of double bonds on carbon chains, positioning of double bonds on carbon chains, number of branches, types of branches, positioning of branches on carbon chains, positioning of acid groups on carbon chains, configurations (cis/trans), functional groups on carbon chains, being saturated/unsaturated, being conjugated/non-conjugated; presence/absence of functional group(s) on carbon chain; being aliphatic/aromatic, or combinations thereof. No organic acid is present in highly diverse mixture in a concentration greater than 80%, or, in some embodiments, greater than 60%, or greater than 40%. HNP composition may be relatively soft/relatively low modulus, relatively hard/relatively high modulus, or blends thereof.

Abstract: Golf ball comprising a positive hardness gradient core and an outer cover layer having a microhardness gradient and being formed from a thermoset polyurethane material throughout, and having: i) a treated region that is contacted with a thermoset polyurethane microhardness-increasing solution consisting of an isocyanate portion and at least one non-aqueous solvent; and ii) an untreated region that is not contacted with the thermoset polyurethane microhardness-increasing solution. The treated region comprises the isocyanate portion, whereas the untreated region does not comprise the isocyanate portion. Treated region has a microhardness M1 that is greater than microhardness M2 of untreated region to define the outer cover layer positive microhardness gradient ΔM=M1−M2. The treated region may have a depth Dtr that extends inward from the cover outer surface and in some embodiments is less than a thickness of the untreated region. Treated region may alternatively extend from the inner surface toward outer surface.
