Abstract:
A rectangular to phase converter (201) includes a first converter circuit (201B) which limits signals to a predetermined level. A phase selector (259) selects a relative phase from the limited signals. According to one aspect of the invention, input rectangular coordinate signals are mapped to the first quadrant in a first quadrant mapping circuit (201A) before the first quadrant signals are limited and the relative phase signal is returned to the original quadrant by an original quadrant mapping circuit (260).
Abstract:
A secure communication system (100) that is capable of over-the-air-rekeying (OTAR) employs a key management controller (108) to provide secure communications for a requested call. The key management controller determines (403) when the requested call has been initiated and identifies (405) some of the plurality of radios as being members of the requested call. A call key is then transmitted (409) to the members of the requested call where it is used (514) for the duration of the requested call. In this manner, secure communications between the members of the requested call is provided.
Abstract:
In a wide area communication system (100) that includes a central controller (101), a plurality of sites (105, 110, 115), and a plurality of subscriber units (107, 108, 112, 113, 117, 118), a requesting subscriber unit can locate a neighboring subscriber unit in the following manner. Each of the plurality of subscriber units registers with the central controller (300). The central controller stores registration information in a database (305). When the requesting subscriber unit transmits a request for identification of a neighboring subscriber unit (310), the central controller determines whether the neighboring subscriber unit exists (315). When the neighboring subscriber unit exists (320), the central controller transmits information pertaining to the neighboring subscriber unit to the requesting subscriber unit (330).
Abstract:
An amplifier (1) used with a pulse width modulated signal which improves the efficiency of a low level input signal comprises two or more switching devices (7, 9) with common source/drain or emitter/collector connections. The gates or the bases of the devices are independently driven to optimize the efficiency of the various Rds (on) resistance values of the transistors (61, 63, 65, 89, 91, 93) used in the devices. The amplifier is operated so that during the highest output levels, select switching devices (61, 63, 65) are utilized to reduce in series resistance with the load (13). As output power decreases, devices (89, 91, 93) with higher Rds (on) resistance values are activated by a control signal which greatly improves DC to DC conversion efficiency with improved output voltage resolution, dynamic range and reduced electromagnetic interference potential.
Abstract:
An antenna (10) includes an antenna element (14) and a composite dielectric structure (13). The composite dielectric structure (13) at least partially envelops the antenna element (14). The dielectric structure (13) is formed to have a gradually decreasing dielectric constant gradient.
Abstract:
A method of dynamically allocating active time slots for a terminal (103) that is operating in a packet data communications system (100) which includes a fixed network (101) and user terminals (103), the system using a channel organized into time slots for scheduling data communications between the network and the user terminals, the method including first communicating information (311), further including a terminal ID (313) and a packet key, representative of an active time slot pattern for the user terminal to the network; and second entering, at the user terminal, an active mode during each active time slot of the active time slot pattern (323).
Abstract:
The method of the present invention includes a step of calculating the derivative (140), or instantaneous rate of change, of the curvature at points in the handwritten input (110). The method then selects as stroke boundary points certain points (or pixels) in the input which lie at a midpoint between a point of high curvature derivative and a succeeding point of low curvature derivative (150). Such boundary points are not influenced by absolute curvature values, but rather only by relative changes in the curvature. The stroke segmentation boundary points are provided to a stroke-based recognizer for interpretation of the handwritten input (170).
Abstract:
A battery charger (10) and associated method for maintaining the charge of a battery (12). The battery charger (10) has a processor (16) and power regulator (15) that apply a low current charge or trickle charge to battery (12). The trickle charge is applied selectively to battery (12) based upon ambient temperature.
Abstract:
A call routing system includes an authorization and call routing equipment (ACRE) (117), a cordless base station (115) connected by a wireline network (111) having caller identification. The cordless base station (115) initiates a call to the ACRE (117), which receives the cordless base station's (115) telephone number. The ACRE (117) then uses the telephone number for routing subsequent telephone calls to the cordless base station (115). The cordless base station (115) can receive and store caller identification information and transmit this information to a radiotelephone (101).
Abstract:
Signaling is inserted (102) into a communication channel of a communication system by inserting the signaling into the communication channel if the communication channel has sufficient available bandwidth (104). If the communication channel does not have sufficient available bandwidth, by reducing the bandwidth of information being communicated on the communication channel (106) and inserting the signaling into the communication channel (108) with reduced information bandwidth.
