Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to realize a small and light blood pump that can control thrombosis and moreover, endure a prolonged use.A blood pump comprising an impeller, a casing having a suction inlet and a delivery outlet and rotatably encasing the impeller, a magnetic drive means for rotating the impeller by magnetically acting from outside of the casing on a magnet that the impeller includes, a magnetic attraction force adjustment means for adjusting the attraction force by said magnetic action, a control means for rotating speed of said magnetic drive means, and a pair of pivot bearings for supporting pivots at both ends of the impeller rotation shaft, wherein the distance between bearing faces of said both pivot bearings is set longer than the length of the rotation shaft of the impeller and the rotation speed of the impeller is controlled to a predetermined speed by said control means for rotating speed so as to levitate the impeller in the blood flow in the casing and to maintain out of contact between the pivots at both ends of the rotation shaft of the impeller and the bearing face of said both pivot bearing.

Abstract: Various “contactless” bearing mechanisms including hydrodynamic and magnetic bearings are provided for a rotary pump as alternatives to mechanical contact bearings. In one embodiment, a pump apparatus includes a pump housing defining a pumping chamber. The housing has a spindle extending into the pumping chamber. A spindle magnet assembly includes first and second magnets disposed within the spindle. The first and second magnets are arranged proximate each other with their respective magnetic vectors opposing each other. The lack of mechanical contact bearings enables longer life pump operation and less damage to working fluids such as blood.

Abstract: A centrifugal fluid pump apparatus includes a control mechanism; and a body including a pump section having an impeller rotating inside a housing; a rotor having an impeller attraction magnet; a motor for rotating the rotor; an impeller attraction electromagnet for attracting the impeller thereto; an impeller-position detection sensor; and hydrodynamic bearing means provided on an inner surface of the housing. The control mechanism has a position sensor output monitoring function or an electromagnet current monitoring function, a motor current monitoring function; and an emergency impeller rotation function. The emergency impeller rotation function includes a rotation termination function of terminating current to the motor and the electromagnet when the failure detection function detects a failure to thereby terminate rotation of the rotor and the impeller; impeller magnetic counterforce application function to apply a current to the electromagnet sufficient to overcome the magnetic attraction force of the rotor to the impeller caused by the magnet; hydrodynamic levitation control detection function to detect rotation of the impeller and the rotor by using a motor current monitored by the motor current monitoring function; motor speed control function for increasing the motor speed and hence the impeller rotation speed up to a predetermined value after the hydrodynamic levitation control detection function detects that the hydraulic bearing coupling between the impeller and the rotor has been made; and impeller magnetic counterforce termination function to terminate current to the electromagnet once the predetermined impeller rotation speed is reached.

Abstract: A control system for a continuous flow rotary blood pump is provided. A normal operating range of the blood pump is established. The normal operating range may comprise a normal pump flow range and a normal pressure head range. A target rotational speed of the pump is set in accordance with the normal operating range. A current operating condition of the blood pump is determined. The current operating condition may comprise a current pump flow, a current pressure head, and a current rotational speed of the pump. The current operating condition is compared with the normal operating range. An appropriate control algorithm is selected from a plurality of available control algorithms based on the comparison. The target rotational speed of the pump is adjusted using the selected control algorithm to maintain or recover the normal operating range.

Abstract: An implantable magnetic suspension blood pump having a rotor magnetically suspended and having blood flow gaps at the axial ends of the rotor so that blood in the gaps is washed out by flow in a conduit along the axis of the rotor connecting the fluid gaps. The blood pump impeller includes main and secondary blades, an exit diffuser uses a plurality of low divergence blades wrapped circumferentially around the pump axis, and concentric cones are used at the pump outlet, all to eliminate flow separation.
