Abstract: The system includes a primary monochromatic beam (6), a radiating source (4), a sample to be analysed (8), an illuminating means (12) designed so that the primary radiation (16) globally illuminates a chosen zone of the sample to be analysed. The system has an optical filtering unit (22,28) to receive the diffused secondary rays emitted by the sample and to produce a spectral image dispersed with this secondary radiation, and limited to a chosen spectral band. The illumination system (12) includes a fibre optic (100) having input and output sections (102,104). An optical unit (106) directs the primary rays into the input section (102) of the optic fibre. An optical system (14,110) optically combines the output section (104) of fibre optic and the zone of the sample to be analysed. A mixer unit (120,130,160) mixes the primary radiation introduced into the fibre optic so as to uniformly illuminate the zone of the sample to be analysed and to balance granularity of the primary radiation to the level of the zone.

Abstract: Device for coupling optical fibres on a photometer, and apparatuses equipped with such a device. The invention consists in the possibility of coupling one or more optical fibres on a conventional photometer, by positioning each of them as one or more sources of the apparatus would be positioned. An adaptor (23), at the end of one or more optical fibres (5), has its image projected through an optional device (24) onto the input slit (25) of the photometer. On a simple apparatus, the adaptor itself may act as the input slit. Most of the light output by the optical fibre having thus been recovered, it is possible to work in multibeam mode or with other techniques than simple single-beam absorbence photometry, or return to a conventional measurement simply by selecting a normal source.

Abstract: In an IR-FR- spectrometer, a light beam (10) is guided from a source to a detector (31) and is passed, in a first mode of operation, by means of first optical means (12, 19, 20) through a sample to be measured (28) and, in a second mode of operation, by second optical means (12, 22, 21) through a reference sample (32). The first and second optical means comprise a common mirror element (12) having at least first and second mirror surfaces (13, 14, 15, 16) which are inclined relative to each other. The mirror surfaces abut in at least one point. There is provided means for moving the mirror element (12) relative to the light beam so that during such relative movement the impinging point of the light beam (10) is displace from the first mirror surface (13), over onto the second mirror surface (14).

Abstract: The accuracy of the ratio between two time-varying quantities represented by electrical signals, such as the sample transmission (or absorption) signal and the reference signal in a double-beam, ratio-recording, infrared spectrophotometer, is impaired if the electrical signals are subject to inconstant phase shifts. The present invention counteracts the effect of phase shift variations, whatever their origin, by alternately reversing the order in which an elemental component of one quantity is made to occur with respect to an elemental component of the other quantity so that the said effect reverses in sign when the order is reversed and substantially cancels out when the respective elemental portions are combined to form the numerator and the denominator of the ratio. The invention is particularly described with reference to a spectrophotometer of the type referred to.
