    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform precise management of speed/quality rendering trade-off and without being concerned with individual rendering parameters. SOLUTION: A graphics rendering system allows retained-mode building and editing of a model, independently of the choice of renderer. Application program calls the rendering system to draw an object and specifies not only the object to draw but also a renderer to use to do so. More than one renderer can be active simultaneously. Furthermore, the application program is caused to call an immediate mode or a retained mode to render a model, without needing to know how many passes the renderer requires to complete an image.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an more effective encoding method between blocks. SOLUTION: There are provided methods for encoding a first pixel set within a first image with reference to a second image within a video sequence in a number of embodiments. Within a first searching window, one method searches and identifies a first specified portion inside the second image that best matches a first pixel set within the first image. Within the first search window inside the second image, another method identifies a first location corresponding to the first specified portion. Next, within a second search window inside the second image that is defined near the first location, this method identifies a second specified portion inside the second image that best matches the first pixel set within the first image.     Abstract: A modem (200) for connecting a computer to a telephone network for data transmission, including a main circuit (210) inside the computer, an auxiliary circuit (220) in a box (225) outside the computer, and a disconnectable connection means (230, C1, 232) between both circuits, the main circuit having a computer interface (216) and a modulator/demodulator (214) for converting digital signals from the computer into analog signals adapted to the network and vice versa, the auxiliary circuit having a telephone line interface coupled to the network and specially designed for the latter. The auxiliary circuit includes a shift register (250, 256) for storing and outputing a first identification code (CPi) representative of the network through the connection means to the main circuit. The connection means includes two conductors (C11, C12) for conveying a clock signal from the main circuit to said shift register means and said code in return. The main circuit includes a first memory (PROM) storing a plurality of identification codes (CPi), each with its corresponding values of operating characteristics (CDi) of a given type of telephone network, a second memory (RAM) for storing the values corresponding to said first identification code, and a microprocessor (218) coupled to both said conductors, to said first and second memories, to the modulator/demodulator and to the the computer interface.

    Abstract: A method for changing the orientation of a graphic object in response to changes in the variable position of that object on the display of a computer is disclosed. The position of the graphic object on the display is determined by the position of a control point having a fixed position in relation to the object and a variable position in relation to the display. The control point is operative to change its position in response to translational signals received by an interactive control device, and the computer is operative to display the object at each position of the control point. A change in the orientation of the object to be displayed at the new position of the control point is determined by establishing a following point having a fixed position with respect to the object and a variable position with respect to the display, and tracking the variable position of the following point behind the path of the motion of the control point. The path of the control point is tracked by the following point by determining the direction and magnitude of change in a vector extending between the control point and the following point and then changing the variable position of the following point to normalize the magnitude of the vector in that direction of change.
