Abstract:
The present invention teaches a cationically charged or neutral microcapsule particle comprising an oil soluble or dispersible core material and a wall material at least partially surrounding the core material, the microcapsule wall material comprising the reaction product of a first composition in the presence of a second composition comprising an emulsifier which is cationic or nonionic, the first composition comprising a reaction product of i) an oil soluble or dispersible amine with ii) a multifunctional acrylate or methacrylate monomer or oligomer, an oil soluble acid and an initiator. The cationic or nonionic emulsifier comprises a water soluble or water dispersible material and optionally a water phase initiator. The first composition initiator and the water phase initiator is an energy-activated initiator. The reaction product of the first composition and second composition results in the formation of a population of microcapsules having a microcapsule wall of low permeance to the core material and having a zeta potential of - 5 millivolts or greater. The resulting microcapsules have adherence to anionic surfaces.

Abstract:
Thermally imaging systems are disclosed that can express at least two colors. The record materials incorporate a layer of an optical color shifting material coated over at least a portion of a heat sensitive layer to provide direct thermally imaging recording materials that express lustrous metallic effects when heated with a thermal printhead. The color shifting material such as interference pigments are coated as a layer applied over at least a portion of the surface area coated with a heat sensitive layer. The optical color shifting materials cooperate in a unique fashion with the underlying chromogen, preferably darkly imaging, of the heat sensitive layer to yield a faux metallic toned image that appears to be an additive effect of the underlying chromogen and the chromatic tone of the color shifting material. The chromogenic material when thermally imaged expresses a first color in surface areas of the record material not coated with the optical color shifting material. The chromogenic material expresses a second color, metallic in appearance, when thermally imaged in surface areas overcoated with the color shifting material. A new class of two color, with at least one color being metallic in appearance thermally-responsive recording material is taught.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for measuring entrained gas content. One of the disclosed apparatus embodiments includes a chamber and piping for process fluid, the piping including two different sectors each comprising a density and temperature gauge having a pressure gauge located upstream and a second pressure gauge located downstream, the two sectors being operatively joined together by a pressure-changing device. The pressure measurement feature may be incorporated into the combination density and temperature gauge, eliminating the need for separate pressure gauges. Data generated by this invention reduces measurement error caused by the dissolving or exsolving of gases with changes in pressure of a fluid, while providing instantaneous measurement, through apparatuses that measure system conditions at each of two pressure states within a very short period of time. For instance, in the context of continuously coating a substrate, the method of this invention comprises: a.) setting a quantitative target for weight-% of one or more solids, e.g. kaolin clay, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, or alumina trihydrate, to be coated onto a substrate such as a paper web; b.) continuously applying the solids to the substrate via a carrier fluid; c.) measuring the apparent density of the slurry; d.) determining the true density of the slurry; e.) calculating the weight-% of solids in the slurry as disclosed above; f.) comparing the calculated weight-% solids to the target weight-% solids; and, g.) if the calculated weight-% is greater or less than the target weight-%, lowering or raising the amount of solids applied in step b.). Many other method and apparatus embodiments are also disclosed.

Abstract:
Dual shell microcapsule aggregate particles and copy materials coated therewith, such aggregate particles having inner shells surrounding chromogenic nucleus material, and outer shells encompassing multiple such inner shells to form aggregate particles thereof. The inner shells are derived from polar pre-polymer compositions. The outer shells are derived from complex colloids such as gelatin and gelatin derivatives. The outer shell material causes agglomeration of the inner shells into aggregate particles, thus increasing the sizes of the particles without increasing the sizes of the respective inner-shell microcapsules which contain the chromogenic material.
