[Also in Division D1] A reel R comprising a central core 1 and end flanges 2, 3 carries a wound package of separate wire strands 4, each strand being wound upon itself in substantial parallelism with all the other strands, and a flexible sheet wound on the reel with the strands to separate successive layers of strands the sheet being separable from the strands. The strands of wire may be laid in contact with each other or may be spaced at the distance required in a subsequent use as reinforcing material. In order that the strands may be maintained in a spaced relation on the reel, the sheet material wound with the strands is preferably provided with folds, creases or corrugations, the strands of wire lying in the troughs of the corrugations. A further layer of sheet material may be adhesively secured to the crests of the corrugations to form a series of sealed tubes in which the strands are located. In a further embodiment, wire strands are also located beneath the crests of the corrugations and a further layer of sheet material applied below the said corrugated sheet. In another embodiment, a layer of flexible sheet material may be applied to both sides of the layer of strands. The sheet material is preferably resilient to compensate for any irregularities in the wire, and the wire strands are substantially of the same length for ease of usage in the manufacture of reinforced sheet material, e.g. vehicle tyres. The interposed sheet material is preferably a synthetic plastics material but may be a textile fabric, paper or rubber. One of the flanges of the reel may be movable axially to compact the strands of wire when wound on the reel. The package consisting of the reel and wound strands of wire may be hermetically packed and sealed to prevent corrosion of the wire.
